Yale Scientists Confirm How Crystals Form A team of researchers at Yale University is the first to devise a way to predict the microstructure of crystals as they form in materials, according to a report in the September issue of Applied Physics Letters. Researchers in many fields including materials science, geology, physical chemistry and biochemistry will now be able to tailor material properties that are sensitive to microstructure. Bad PMS May Mean A Depressed Nervous System For some women premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a minor monthly annoyance, but for others, more severe symptoms seriously disrupt their lives. New findings suggest not only that PMS is tied to decreased nerve activity each month, but also that those with extreme symptoms may have a permanently depressed nervous system. Alpine Bird Numbers On The Slide Due To High-altitude Ski Runs High-altitude ski runs are seriously affecting Alpine birds, ecologists have found for the first time. Writing in the January issue of the Journal of Applied Ecology, Italian ecologists warn that ski pistes above the tree line result in fewer species and lower numbers of birds compared with natural grassland at similar altitudes. Ski developers should use new, environmentally-friendly techniques when constructing pistes in future, they say. Queen Bees Shown To Pass Viruses To Their Offspring The first evidence that viruses can be transmitted vertically from mother queens to their offspring in honey bee colonies has been discovered by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists. ARS entomologists Yanping Chen, Jeff Pettis, Jay Evans, Anita Collins and Mark Feldlaufer in Beltsville, Md., made the discovery by testing individual queen bees and their offspring for deformed wing virus, sacbrood virus and black queen cell virus. 3-D Ultrasound Provides In-depth View Of The Brain Biomedical engineers have adapted a three-dimensional ultrasound scanner that might guide minimally invasive brain surgeries and provide better detection of a brain tumor's location. Brain surgeons currently rely primarily on two-dimensional images produced by MRI or ultrasound. Police said they were searching for a gunman who ran up to a woman while she was walking her dog Monday night and grabbed the bag she was holding. It contained poop. New Pain Killer Allows Other Touch Sensations Through A combination of two drugs can selectively block pain-sensing neurons in rats without impairing movement or other sensations such as touch, according to a new study. Scientists have combined a normally inactive lidocaine derivative with capsaicin, the 'heat'-generating ingredient in chili peppers, to produce pain-specific local anesthesia. The finding suggests an improved way to treat pain from childbirth and surgical procedures. It may also lead to new treatments to help the millions of Americans who suffer from chronic pain. Mercury and Vaccines (Thimerosal) "Thimerosal is a mercury-containing preservative used in some vaccines ... since the 1930's."A 2005 book suggests that there is an "association between [mercury in] vaccines and autism."This site addresses questions raised in the book, information about CDC thimerosal research, and basic information about thimerosal. Also includes information about a 2004 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on vaccines and autism. From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Immunization Program (NIP).
