Biscuit

In the Southern United States, biscuit means a form of bread similar to a roll made with baking powder or baking soda as a rising agent rather than yeast (rolls made with yeast are often called "yeast rolls" to distinguish them, and biscuits and corn bread are sometimes referred to collectively as "quick bread")

A basic biscuit recipe includes flour, shortening (often lard), baking powder or soda, and milk (buttermilk or sweet milk). Common variations involve cheese or sugar.

In Europe, a biscuit is a harder baked product which in North America would be called a "cookie". The origins of the word mean twice cooked.

Why Is The Helix Such A Popular Shape? Perhaps Because They Are Nature
Something about nature loves a helix, the ubiquitous spiral shape taken on by DNA and many other molecules found in the cells of living creatures. The shape is so useful that, while researching the means of creating self-assembling artificial helices, physicists at the University of Pennsylvania believe that they have come across a plausible mathematical reason for why the helical shape is so common.

New Pathway Identified In Angiogenesis
Scientists have discovered a new biological pathway that may be useful in regulating angiogenesis, the process the body uses to build new blood vessels. The findings, published in the December issue of the journal Immunity, may offer clinicians a new way to intervene in a broad range of diseases and disorders, including cancer, heart and lung disease, wound healing and transplantation.

Here are the 10 most fun, most visited or (IMHO) most important stories this young blog flagged this year -- like Sen. Laser Treatment Not Effective In Preventing Vision Loss For People Wit
According to a study that appears in the November 2006 issue of the journal Ophthalmology, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and 21 other clinical centers have found that low-intensity laser treatment -- thought to be potentially beneficial in slowing or preventing the loss of vision from age-related macular degeneration -- is ineffective in preventing complications of AMD or vision loss.

Cassini Finds Possible Origin Of One Of Saturn's Rings
Cassini scientists may have identified the source of one of Saturn's more mysterious rings. Saturn's G ring likely is produced by relatively large, icy particles that reside within a bright arc on the ring's inner edge. The particles are confined within the arc by gravitational effects from Saturn's moon Mimas. Micro-meteoroids collide with the particles, releasing smaller, dust-sized particles that brighten the arc. The plasma in the giant planet's magnetic field sweeps through this arc continually, dragging out the fine particles, which create the G ring.

The Declaration of Independence: Our National Treasure
"While the [2004] movie 'National Treasure' suggests that something is on the back of the Declaration of Independence, you've come to the right place to find out what's really on the reverse."The site features an image of the back, questions and answers about the Declaration, and the article "The Flip Side of History"(about what is written on the backs of other important historical documents). Gene Variant Linked To Chronic Kidney Disease
Two common gene variations are associated with the risk for developing chronic kidney disease. The study is the first large-scale investigation of the role Apolipoprotein E (APOE) alleles play in chronic kidney disease. APOE is known to be associated with risk of Alzheimer's disease and heart disease but interestingly, the kidney disease association is in the opposite direction.

Adult Stem Cells To Repair Hearts Damaged By Severe Coronary Artery Di

Consumer and Media Alert: The Small Print That's Devastating Major Con
This 2003 article discusses the use of mandatory arbitration clauses (which preclude a resort to a court of law) to govern the resolution of disputes arising under many types of consumer contracts. The article notes that such clauses may appear in "loans, phone bills, home construction and repair contracts, stock brokerage agreements, pest-control contracts, bank depositors' agreements, college loans, mobile home purchases, [and] employment agreements."From the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC).
