Washington's Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy This document outlines the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's "management framework for the protection of Washington [state]'s species and habitats in greatest need of conservation."Topics covered include water quality, salmon recovery, forest conservation, agriculture and livestock, species of concern in the state, and related areas. Includes background, information about Washington state's "ecoregions,"a glossary, and a list of acronyms. UBC Researchers Explain Why Females Are Better Off Choosing Unattracti In a research paper published in the journal Science, UBC zoology professor Sarah Otto and graduate student Arianne Albert propose a model that explains why males in some species have extravagant displays for attracting females, while males in other species look just like females.
Heat Stress Influences Low Conception Of Dairy Herds Summer heat stress is a main factor related to low conception rates in high producing dairy herds in warm areas worldwide. A research group studied the impact of several climate variables on conception rates in high producing dairy cows in northeastern Spain by examining 10,964 inseminations. Explosions In Space May Have Initiated Ancient Extinction On Earth Scientists at NASA and the University of Kansas say that a mass extinction on Earth hundreds of millions of years ago could have been triggered by a star explosion called a gamma-ray burst. The scientists do not have direct evidence that such a burst activated the ancient extinction. The strength of their work is their atmospheric modeling -- essentially a "what if"scenario. Tumor-reactive T Cells Boosted By Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantat Treatment for skin cancer by infusion of tumor-reactive T cells requires patients to be pre-treated with agents that transiently decrease the number of immune cells (nonmyeloablative agents). A study in mice now indicates that pre-treatment with more intense immune cell--depleting strategies (known as myeloablative strategies) and a hematopoietic stem cell transplant enables infused tumor-reactive CD8+ T cells to increase in number more than pre-treatment with nonmyeloablative agents, and this correlates with increased tumor regression. The New de Young Series of articles on the grand opening in October 2005 of the new M.H. de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. The "sinuous copper-clad structure ... has been likened to a Mayan temple or a rusty aircraft carrier, complete with an observation deck."Includes news and opinion pieces, photos, a chronology of the museum back to 1893, and audio and video tours of the new museum building. From the website for the San Francisco Chronicle. Google Earth: Hurricane Katrina Imagery Google Earth's "3D interface to the planet"software provides satellite photos and image overlays showing the impact of Hurricane Katrina. Includes before-and-after images and views of affected areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Requires a broadband connection and a free download of Google Earth (currently not available for Apple Macintosh or older Windows machines). Colorectal Cancer Screening Underutilized Fewer than half of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer had received a screening procedure at least six months prior to their diagnosis, according to a new study. Researchers writing in the February 15, 2005 issue of CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, further say almost 94 percent of colorectal cancer patients had either not undergone a colonoscopy at all, or not until having the procedure that led to their diagnosis. Great Plains Farmers Are Diversifying The days of growing wheat every other year or two and leaving the ground bare the rest of the time are a thing of the past in the Great Plains states. Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists are giving farmers more than a dozen crops to choose from each year, and the means to make choices from among more than 100 possible combinations. Ecological Topics: Pollinators Collection of resources on "the biology, ecology, conservation status, and threats to native pollinators, pollinator-dependent species, and pollinator habitats in the United States and abroad."Includes background about pollination (including plant features used by pollinators), descriptions of specific pollinator species (bees, birds, bats, and insects), material on conservation and on farming and gardening for pollinators, news and updates, teaching resources, and more. From the National Biological Information Infrastructure, administered by the U.S. Geological Survey.
