Biton

In Greek mythology, Biton was the son of Cydippe and brother of Cleobis.

Cydippe, a priestess of Hera, was on her way to a festival in the goddess' honor. The oxen which were to pull her cart were overdue and her sons, Biton and Cleobis pulled the cart the entire way (45 stadia; 8 km). Cydippe was impressed with their devotion to her and her goddess and asked Hera to give her children the best gift a god could give a person. Hera ordained that the brothers would die in their sleep.

Transgenic Goat's Milk Offers Hope For Tackling Children's Intestinal
Animal scientists at the University of California, Davis, have found that milk produced by transgenic goats, which carry the gene for an antibacterial enzyme found in human breast milk, altered the intestinal bacteria in young goats and pigs that were fed the milk. They hope these findings will one day lead to milk that protects infants and children against diarrheal illnesses, which each year kill more than 2 million children worldwide.

Extracting Eggs From Pre-pubertal Cancer Patients Brings Hope For Futu
Scientists in Israel have been able to obtain and freeze eggs from the ovarian tissue of girls as young as 5 years old, the 23rd Annual Conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology will hear on Tuesday, July 3. Dr. Ariel Revel, from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Hadassah University Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel said that the growing number of survivors of childhood cancers meant that such techniques would become increasingly important in preserving fertility in young patients.

When Does A Mole Become A Melanoma?
Researchers at Children's Hospital Boston and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have found an important clue about the origins of the deadly skin cancer melanoma. Using black-and-white-striped zebrafish to model human melanoma, they showed that a specific mutation in a gene called BRAF is critical to the development of moles, and when combined with a separate mutation, leads to cancer.

Early Bronze Age Mortuary Complex Discovered In Syria
An ancient, untouched Syrian tomb that wowed the archaeological world on its discovery by Johns Hopkins University researchers nearly six years ago is not alone. Additional excavations have yielded a total of at least eight tombs filled with human and animal remains, gold and silver treasures and unbroken artifacts dating back to the third millennium B.C.

Studies Of Population Genetics, Evolution Are An Exercise In Bad Taste
Scientific studies of why foods such as Brussels sprouts and stout beer are horribly bitter-tasting to some people but palatable to others are shedding light on a number of questions, from the mechanisms of natural selection to understanding how our genes affect our dietary habits.

Marathon Of Nano-Sprinters
Max Planck scientists show that the cooperation of a small number of molecular motors yields cargo transport over large distances.

A Data 'Repair Kit' For Quantum Computers
A practical method for automatically correcting data-handling errors in quantum computers has been developed and demonstrated by physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Popular Insecticide Detected In Suburban Stream Beds
For the first time, researchers have detected high concentrations of pyrethroids, a popular insecticide, in suburban stream sediments, raising concerns about its effects on aquatic life. The finding, by Donald Weston of the University of California, Berkeley and others, appears in the Dec. 1, issue of the American Chemical Society's journal, Environmental Science &Technology.

Mechanisms Of Voltage Sensing And Transduction In Biological Processes
The voltage sensor of voltage-gated ion channels is a conserved protein domain that senses millivolt changes in transmembrane potential, to regulate ion permeation through the channel. A recently discovered protein, Ci-VSP, has a voltage sensor that is coupled not to an ion channel but to a phosphatidylinositide phosphosphatase, the activity of which depends on membrane potential.
