Physics researchers working at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) Laboratory in Japan have observed a new type of interaction among the most fundamental of particles, the quark. Researchers have discovered a gene that protects us against a serious kidney disease. They report that mutations in the gene cause nephronopthisis (NPHP) in humans and mice.
