Indigenous Water Frogs In Europe Under Threat Indigenous water frogs can be crowded out by immigrant or imported species. This is the finding of a Franco-German study. The scientists investigated water frog populations in France and Northern Spain and noticed that the marsh frog (Rana ridibunda), which normally occurs only in Eastern Europe, has the potential to crowd out indigenous species like Graf's hybrid frog (Rana grafi) and the Iberian water frog (Rana perezi). Ancient African Megadroughts May Have Driven Human Evolution -- Out Of From 135,000 to 90,000 years ago tropical Africa had megadroughts more extreme and widespread than any previously known for that region, according to new research. Learning that now-lush tropical Africa was an arid scrubland during the early Late Pleistocene provides new insights into humans'migration out of Africa and the evolution of fishes in Africa's Great Lakes. The new finding provides an ecological explanation for the Out-of-Africa hypothesis that suggests all humans descended from just a few people living in Africa sometime between 150,000 and 70,000 years ago. Too Many Vitamins? One Antioxidant Linked To Heart Disease, Study Show Antioxidants are widely considered an important defense against heart disease, but researchers have found excessive levels of one antioxidant -- reduced glutathione -- actually may contribute to the disease. The findings indicate a new class of drugs can be developed to treat or even prevent heart disease caused by "reductive stress,"according to the study's principal author. Controlling For Size May Also Prevent Cancer Scientists discovered that a chemical chain reaction that controls organ size in animals ranging from insects to humans could mean the difference between normal growth and cancer. The study describes how organs can grow uncontrollably huge and become cancerous when this chain reaction is perturbed.
