Gene Makes Muscles In The Obese Store More Fat The gene encoding an enzyme that hinders muscle from burning fat manufactures three times more enzyme in the muscle of obese people than lean people, researchers from Duke University Medical Center and Louisiana State University have found. This causes the obese muscle tissue to both store more fat and burn less fat, the researchers said.
[Scary] Pregnant woman says 'maternal instinct' helped her kill attack FORT MITCHELL, Ky. - A pregnant woman who killed her attacker said a maternal instinct helped her fight off the woman who investigators believe was after her unborn child."I do believe that I fought harder because it was for my child,"Sarah Brady told ABC's "Good Morning America"in interviews aired Sunday and Monday. "It is a maternal instinct to protect your child to the very end."Katherine Smith, 22, died Thursday after luring Brady to her apartment to pick up a package supposedly delivered to the wrong address. When Smith pulled out a knife and attacked the pregnant woman, Brady fought back, striking Smith on the head with an ash tray and stabbing her three times with her own knife, police said. Brady, 26, said she didn't know Smith before the two met at Smith's apartment and can't be certain why Smith wanted to kill her."I really am not sure what was going through her mind,"Brady told ABC. "The only thing I thought was that she was going to kill me and my child and that is the only thing that ran through my mind." Evolution Of Male-female Differences Within A Shared Genome One of the major components of the world's biological diversity are the differences between males and females in traits related to mating, including weapons used when competing for mates and display traits used to seduce them. Such gender differences are thought to arise because selection acts differently on each sex. The conflicting interests of males and females in reproduction are thought to be a key source of sex-specific selection on such traits. Safety Of New Microbicide For HIV Prevention To Be Tested In Young Wom In an effort to help stem the tide of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, particularly in women, researchers have launched a clinical safety trial of a topical vaginal microbicide with a unique molecular structure that holds promise for preventing the sexual transmission of HIV. The Microbicide Trials Network is leading the NIH-funded study in which VivaGel is being tested for the first time in sexually active young women to determine its safety, acceptability and ease of use. Stressed Mice Quicker To Get Skin Cancer Does stress speed up the onset of skin cancer? The answer, in mice anyway, appears to be "yes."Scientists at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center say that chronic stress may speed up the process in those at high-risk for the disease. How Schizophrenia Develops: Major Clues Discovered We know that something happens during brain development that contributes to schizophrenia. A glitch in the process that turns genes on and off in the brain -- a specific "epigenetic"flaw -- appears to be part of the problem. Unlocking the IPhone Is Near Impossible Unless You're a Supergeek Trying to get your iPhone unlocked and working on a non-AT&T network? If you're not a supergeek, you've probably found the unlocking processes are not ready for the average Joe. We've put a stub of a "jailbreak" procedure on the How To Wiki, so help us update it. Luckily, a one-click package installer is on the way. Plastic Diode Could Lead To Flexible, Low Power Computer Circuits, Mem Researchers have invented a new organic polymer tunnel diode -- an electronic component that could one day lead to plastic computer memory and plastic logic circuits on computer chips. Today, computer chips use mainly inorganic silicon. The diode transmits electrical current at room temperature, and its design lends itself to easy, inexpensive manufacturing for smart cards and other memory devices.
