Rotting Food? Traces Of Explosives? New Method Reveals Substances On S
Researchers have developed a new method that allows even the surfaces of living organisms to be examined quickly and simply. The method opens up interesting new possibilities not only in medicine, but also in monitoring foods.

Researchers Show Beneficial Role Of Risk Calculator In Fighting Progre
A new glaucoma risk calculator, which estimates a patient's risk of converting from high eye pressure, or ocular hypertension, to glaucoma, will help physicians determine whether to initiate therapy for patients. High eye pressure is the leading risk factor for glaucoma, and is the only modifiable one. If glaucoma is untreated, vision loss may continue, leading to blindness in some individuals.

Scientists Discover Possible Titan Volcano
A recent flyby of Saturn's hazy moon Titan by the Cassini spacecraft has revealed evidence of a possible volcano, which could be a source of methane in Titan's atmosphere. Images taken in infrared light show a circular feature roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) in diameter that does not resemble any features seen on Saturn's other icy moons. Scientists interpret the feature as an "ice volcano,"a dome formed by upwelling icy plumes that release methane into Titan's atmosphere.

Researchers Discover Key Mechanism By Which Lethal Viruses Ebola And M
Researchers in the Greene Infectious Disease Laboratory at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Caribbean Primate Research Center have discovered a key mechanism by which the Filoviruses, Ebola and Marburg, cause disease.

Novel Semiconductor Structure Bends Light 'Wrong'Way -- Exciting Appli
Scientists have created an easy-to-produce material from the stuff of computer chips that has the rare ability to bend light in the opposite direction from all naturally occurring materials. This startling property may contribute to significant advances in many areas, including high-speed communications, medical diagnostics and detection of terrorist threats.

Webcasting Royalties: A Modest Proposal
Internet radio's temporary reprieve from a potentially fatal royalty rate hike offers an opportunity for a reasoned look at the situation. Comentary by Eliot Van Buskirk.

Newly Discovered Genetic Disease Sheds Light On Body's Water Balance
Two infant boys whose bodies were overloaded with excess fluid have led UCSF pediatricians to the discovery of a new genetic disease. In the process, they have discovered a rare type of mutation where different substitutions in a single amino acid cause two different, opposite genetic disorders.

Qubit Link Could Pave The Way For World's Most Powerful Computers
Scientists at The University of Manchester have made a major breakthrough which could pave the way for a new type of high-speed computer. Professor Richard Winpenny, of the School of Chemistry and a team of international researchers, have discovered a new method which could hold the key to creating the first practical quantum computers. If built, quantum computers would be the most powerful computers ever made, with speeds millions of times faster than the average PC for some calculations.

Mahir to Borat: I Sue You!
The mockumentary Borat bears more than a passing resemblance to late '90s net celeb Mahir Cagri of ikissyou.org, and he's not amused. Steven Leckart of Wired magazine gives him the third degree.

Soil Fungi Linked To Insect-Associated Decline Of Resistant Grape Root
Although the destructive phylloxera insects have been reported feeding on grape rootstocks in several declining Northern California vineyards, the cause of the damage appears to be fungal activity rather than the loss of rootstock resistance, report researchers at the University of California, Davis.
