British professional qualifications

Professional qualifications in the UK are generally awarded by professional bodies in line with their charters. These qualifications are subject to the European directives on professional qualifications. Most, but not all, professional qualifications are 'Chartered' qualifications, and follow on from having done a degree (or equivalent qualification). The lists below give the professional qualifications to which the European regulations apply:

Observing Einstein's Gravitational Waves
A hundred years ago, Albert Einstein published his theory of relativity. The joint ESA-NASA "LISA"mission hopes to detect gravitational waves in space. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission, whose launch is envisaged for 2013, will use laser interferometers - very sensitive tools to measure tiny variations in the distance between objects -- and proof masses on board three spacecraft flying in formation.

Astronomers Say Moons Like Ours Are Uncommon
The next time you take a moonlit stroll, or admire a full, bright-white moon looming in the night sky, you might count yourself lucky. New observations suggest that moons like Earth's -- that formed out of tremendous collisions -- are uncommon in the universe, arising at most in only five to ten percent of planetary systems.

Happy Birthday, Venus Express!
One year after its launch on November 9, 2005, and a few months into its science phase, ESA's Venus Express keeps working well and continues to gather lots of data about the hot and noxious atmosphere of the planet. Newly released images show additional details of the thick cloud deck that surrounds Venus.

Ultra-Sensitive Measurements Of Changes In Images Using Slow Light
Assistant Professor John Howell and his Quantum Optics team at the University of Rochester have discovered a way to manipulate a light field while retaining all of the information it carries. A considerable advance in imaging technology, the new method detects subtle changes in an image over time. Using photons and atomic vapor in what is known as imaging with slow light, the new technique precisely slows the image while retaining all of its properties.
