British Somaliland

The British Somaliland Protectorate was a British protectorate in the north part of the Horn of Africa, later part of Somalia.

Egypt dominated the area in the 1870s, but withdrew in 1884, upon which the British established a protectorate and garrisoned it from Aden. The protectorate was administered from British India until 1898, then by the Foreign Office, and after 1905 the Colonial Office.

The protectorate was occupated by Italy in August 1940, but recaptured in a campaign in March 1941.

A referendum indicated support for unification with Somalia, which occurred 1 July 1960.

Postage stamps

Originally mail from Somaliland used postage stamps of Egypt, then India. In 1903, about 30 types of stamps of India were overprinted "BRITISH / SOMALILAND".

In 1904 the protectorate issued its own stamps, featuring a profile of King Edwarf VII, and inscribed "SOMALILAND PROTECTORATE". Issues of George V used the same design with George's profile.

After George VI ascended the throne, the new series of 12 values used three pictorial designs; a Berbera blackhead sheep, Greater Kudu antelope, and a map. The 1938 series included a 3/4 portrait of the king; in 1942, with the restoration of civil postal service, new stamps used a full-face portrait, and the sheep design was re-engraved.

Around 1950 the currency changed from annas and rupees to centss and shillings, and the 1942 stamps were appropriately surcharged. Ironically, the UPU 75th anniversary issue was printed in cents and shillings, but its issue date was 10 October 1949, before the changeover, so those stamps had to be surcharged in the old currency.

Queen Elizabeth II ushered in a new series featuring a variety of local wildlife and scenes. Some values of these stamps were overprinted 21 May 1957 with "OPENING / OF THE / LEGISLATIVE / COUNCIL / 1957", and on 5 April 1960 with "LEGISLATIVE / COUNCIL / UNOFFICIAL / MAJORITY, / 1960" to mark the events as named by the overprints.

All the stamps of British Somaliland were withdrawn from sale on 25 June 1960; for the week prior to formal unification on 1 July, stamps of Italian Somaliland and Somalia were used.

Women 40 years and younger with early-stage breast cancer who receive an additional high dose of radiation after undergoing breast-conserving surgery and standard radiation treatment are almost twice as likely to be free of cancer 10 years after treatment compared to those who don't receive the boost dose.

Team Builds Viruses To Combat Harmful 'Biofilms'
In one of the first potential applications of synthetic biology, an emerging field that aims to design and build useful biomolecular systems, researchers from MIT and Boston University are engineering viruses to attack and destroy the surface "biofilms"that harbor harmful bacteria in the body and on industrial and medical devices.

Pest-resistant Eggplant Under Development For South Asia
Scientists are developing a pest-resistant eggplant, which is expected to be the first genetically engineered food crop in South Asia. The engineered eggplant expresses a natural insecticide derived from the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), making it resistant to the fruit and shoot borer (FSB), a highly destructive pest. The tiny larvae account for up to 40 percent of eggplant crop losses each year in India, Bangladesh and the Philippines, and other areas of South and Southeast Asia.

Latest U.S. Mental Health Tracking Survey Shows Mixed Results Of Progr
In a set of four papers published in the June issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, the survey authors reported that a majority of Americans will have a mental health disorder at some time in their life, but that most are mild; that those disorders often go untreated; and that even when treatment does occur, the care provided will likely not meet recommended mental health treatment guidelines for the disease.

Risk Analysis Reports Over Half Of World's Population Exposed To One O
The World Bank has published a report entitled, "Natural Disaster Hotspots: A Global Risk Analysis,"that presents a global view of disaster risks associated with some major natural hazards--drought, floods, cyclones, earthquakes, volcanoes and landslides. The report identifies high-risk geographic regions so that development efforts can be better informed and designed to reduce disaster-related losses in the future.

Tiny Chemical Change In Horse Herpes Virus Can Have Lethal Effect
Microbiologists show that change in just one amino acid in a horse herpes virus can make all the difference between triggering a cold or a life-threatening neurological disorder.

How Pain Distracts The Brain
Anybody who's tried to concentrate on work while suffering a headache knows that pain compellingly commands attention -- which is how evolution helped ensure survival in a painful world. Now, researchers have pinpointed the brain region responsible for pain's ability to affect cognitive processing. They have found that this pain-related brain region is distinct from the one involved in cognitive processing interference due to a distracting memory task.

Mapping The Neural Landscape Of Hunger
The compelling urge to satisfy one's hunger enlists structures throughout the brain, as might be expected in a process so necessary for survival. But until now, studies of those structures and of the feeding cycle have been only fragmentary -- measuring brain regions only at specific times in the feeding cycle.
