Embryonic Stem Cells Treated With Growth Factor Reverse Hemophilia In University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers have made a discovery that may have implications for the treatment of liver-based genetic defects such as hemophilia A and B in humans. Taking Nanolithography Beyond Semiconductors A new process for chemical patterning combines molecular self-assembly with traditional lithography to create multifunctional surfaces in precise patterns at the molecular level. The process allows scientists to create surfaces with varied chemical functionalities and promises to extend lithography to applications beyond traditional semiconductors. The new technique, which could have a number of practical chemical and biochemical applications, will be described in the December 22, 2006 issue of the journal Advanced Materials. The Reader's Companion to American History: Monroe Doctrine An overview of the history of the Monroe Doctrine, as put forth on December 2, 1823, by President James Monroe when he stated, "The American continents ... are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers."Also includes a discussion of the development of the doctrine, such as how Theodore Roosevelt's "'Big Stick' Latin American policy became synonymous with the Monroe Doctrine."From the Houghton Mifflin Company. Vioxx (rofecoxib) "Vioxx is a prescription COX-2 selective, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was approved by FDA ... for the relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis,"and other conditions. This site provides information about the September 2004 voluntary withdrawal of Vioxx "due to safety concerns of an increased risk of cardiovascular events (including heart attack and stroke) in patients on Vioxx."From the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Researchers Discover Key Mechanism To Emergence Of Deadly Strep Bacter Serious strep infections have risen dramatically in the last three decades, and this increase is largely attributed to the spread around the globe of a single strain of strep known as the invasive M1T1 clone. Researchers at the UCSD School of Medicine and the University of Wollongong in Australia have discovered that, 30 years ago, a virus infected the strep bacteria -- creating a deadly strain of "flesh-eating"bacteria. Compounds May Help Produce Juicier Meat Getting a juicy cut of meat isn't always the easiest of tasks. Juiciness is governed by how much fat--called marbling fat--is woven within the muscles. But the likelihood of getting a juicy steak or chop may increase in the future, thanks to Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists who are studying a class of compounds that increase marbling fat in livestock. Protecting Homes From Wildfires: New Firebrand Aids Research Crackling embers and glowing firebrands might make for a romantic evening in front of the fireplace, but for homeowners in high fire-risk areas, windborne fire material is the stuff of nightmares. To learn how to mitigate such threats, researchers have built a firebrand generator that can be used to study the way firebrands ignite structures. The unique device allows for the generation of controlled and repeatable firebrands that can be adjusted to be representative of typical firebrands produced from burning vegetation. Iowa Caucus 2008 Official website for the Iowa Caucus, in which political party members gather in January to make policy decisions and to select candidates, and which is the earliest step in the electoral process for U.S. presidential candidates. Provides background about the caucus (such as how the caucuses began, how they work, and how Iowa gained its first-in-the-nation status) and links to candidate websites. Also includes links to facts about Iowa. Double heart trouble US researchers have demonstrated that MRI is twice as sensitive as other techniques at detecting early heart damage in patients with the immune system disorder sarcoidosis. The early detection of heart problems in patients with sarcoidosis is imperative if the risk of dying from heart failure is to be reduced for such patients. Sarcoidosis is [...] [Odd] A Romanian couple has named their son Yahoo as a sign of gratitu Daily Libertatea said on Thursday Cornelia and Nonu Dragoman, both from Transylvania, met and decided they were meant for each other following a three-month relationship over the net. They married and had a baby this Christmas, whom they decided to name after one of the worldwide web's most popular portals."We named him Lucian Yahoo after my father and the net, the main beacon of my life,"Cornelia Dragoman was quoted as saying.
