Extreme Irritability: Is It Childhood Bipolar Disorder? Brain's Electr Measurements of brainwaves in kids with extreme irritability suggest that different brain mechanisms are at play, depending on the disorders the kids have. This finding brings us a step closer to the day when clinicians can use biological measurements -- rather than depending only on behavioral symptoms or self-reports -- to diagnose psychiatric disorders. Flexible Copyrights Hop the Pond The BBC and other media groups unveil new Creative Commons-inspired licenses that will allow the public to use footage from the archives as raw material for new creative works. By Katie Dean. Bacteria Employ Type Of DNA Modification Never Before Seen In Nature Scientists have discovered that bacteria employ a type of DNA modification never before seen in nature. For several decades, researchers have known that it is possible to modify synthetic oligonucleotides (short strands of DNA) by adding sulfur to the sugar-phosphate DNA backbone as a phosphorothioate. Researchers often use such modifications in the laboratory to make DNA resistant to nucleases (enzymes that snip DNA in certain locations) as a step toward gene and antisense therapies of human diseases. Scientists were surprised to discover that a group of bacterial genes, known as the dnd gene cluster, gives bacteria the ability to employ the same modification on their own. Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) Website for an "international trade association representing the interests of independent owner-operators and professional drivers on all issues that affect truckers."Features articles from the organization's magazine, special reports on topics such as border crossing and fuel prices, trucking news headlines, blogs, an industry calendar, and regulatory documents. Some additional materials only available to members. Intergalactic 'Shot In The Dark'Shocks Astronomers Astronomers have discovered a cosmic explosion that seems to have come from the middle of nowhere -- thousands of light-years from the nearest galaxy-sized collectionof stars, gas, and dust. This "shot in the dark"is surprising because the type of explosion, a long-duration gamma-ray burst, is thought to be powered by the death of a massive star. Ice Age Extinction Claimed Highly Carnivorous Alaskan Wolves The extinction of many large mammals at the end of the Ice Age may have packed an even bigger punch than scientists have realized. To the list of victims such as woolly mammoths and saber-toothed cats, scientists have added one more: a highly carnivorous form of wolf that lived in Alaska, north of the ice sheets. A Deep Sea Hydrocarbon Factory A team of University of Minnesota scientists has discovered how iron- and chromium-rich rocks can generate natural gas (methane) and related hydrocarbons when reacted with superheated fluids circulating deep beneath the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. The Numbers Game Discussion of this form of illegal lottery as played in Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s. "The game is played by players betting on a series of three numbers. ... A player would win if his/her numbers matched a preset series of three numbers, which were found in daily newspapers as the last three digits of either the NYSE total, U.S. Treasury balance, or total bets at a selected racetrack."From Court TV's Crime Library. Good Results With Only One Egg In In-vitro Fertilization Nearly as many women who received only one embryo at a time gave birth as women who received two embryos. At the same time the risk of giving birth to twins is minimized. These are the findings of a major study from the Sahlgrenska Academy, at Göteborg University in Sweden. Cancer Treatment: Radiation Seed Implant Decreases Risk Of Death Over Prostate cancer patients cut their risk of dying of the disease in half when they receive radiation seed implants to treat their cancer, compared to those who don't receive active treatment, within six months from being diagnosed with localized prostate cancer, according to a new study.
