No 'Smoking' Gun: Research Indicates Teen Marijuana Use Does Not Predi Marijuana is not a "gateway"drug that predicts or eventually leads to substance abuse, suggests a 12-year University of Pittsburgh study. The study, which found that young men who chose to initiate their drug use with marijuana were no more likely to go on to abuse drugs or alcohol than those who smoked or drank first, calls into question the long-held belief that has shaped prevention efforts and governmental policy for six decades. Underwater Robot Launched From Bermuda To Cross Gulf Stream A small autonomous underwater vehicle, or AUV, named Spray was launched recently about 12 miles southeast of Bermuda. The two-meter-(6-foot)-long orange glider with a four-foot wingspan will slowly make its way northwest, crossing the Gulf Stream and reaching the continental shelf on the other side before turning around and heading back to Bermuda, where it will be recovered in July. New Theory For Mass Extinctions A new theory on just what causes Earth's worst mass extinctions may help settle the endless scientific dust-up on the matter. Whether you favor meteor impacts, volcanic eruptions, cosmic rays, epidemics or some other cause for the worst mass extinction events in Earth's history, no single cause has ever satisfied all scientists all the time for any extinction event. That may be because big extinctions aren't simple events. Magnetic Stimulation Treatment For Depression Helping Difficult-to-tre Barbara Baas ran away from home and tried to kill herself as a teenager. As an adult, she has tried more than 15 varieties of antidepressants. But, thanks to a new weapon, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), she has finally reached a truce in a 45-year battle. Role Of Oxidative Stress In Estrogen-related Bone Loss Illuminated Scientists have discovered new information about an immune pathway in mice that explains how oxidative stress that results from acute estrogen deficiency leads to the loss of bone. The finding could help in identifying a new drug target for preventing postmenopausal bone loss. Mouse With Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 Finds RNA Binding Proteins At Hea A new mouse model for myotonic dystrophy -- the most common form of adult-onset muscular dystrophy -- helped researchers show that levels of CUGBP1, a protein that binds and controls the activity of the genetic material RNA, increase early in affected cells of the animals with the disease. This means CUGBP1 plays a key role in the disorder. Decision Makers May Be Blind To The Outcome Of Their Choice When evaluating facial attractiveness, participants may fail to notice a radical change to the outcome of their choice, according to a study by researchers at Lund University, Sweden, and New York University. Equally surprising, the study shows that participants may produce confabulatory reports when asked to describe the reasons behind their choices. The findings appear in the October 7 issue of Science. First Clinical Trial Using T-reg Cells From Cord Blood In Leukemia Tre Researchers have initiated a new clinical trial to determine the optimal dose and safety of T regulatory cells (T-regs) to decrease the risk of immune reactions common in patients undergoing blood and marrow transplantation. The therapy may lead to a future treatment for diabetes and other autoimmune diseases.
