First Glimpse Of Influenza Replication Machine Specific mutations in a viral protein, the polymerase, contribute to the ability of the bird influenza virus to jump the species barrier to humans. Researchers from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Grenoble and Heidelberg, the Institut de Biologie Structurale (IBS) and the Unit of Virus Host Cell Interactions (UVHCI)*, both in Grenoble, have now produced the first 3-D image of part of this key protein. Faster, More Accurate Tuberculosis Test Developed A simple and rapid new tuberculosis test has been developed by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Imperial College London, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, in Lima, Peru. The test, called microscopic-observation drug-susceptibility or MODS, is more sensitive, faster and cheaper to perform than current culture-based tests. Varying Weight Training Intensity Increases Growth Hormone In Women Women who undertake a long-term weight training program produce more biologically active growth hormone, a finding that allows physiologists to understand why weight training improves muscle tone and optimizes metabolic function. The study found that growth hormone was responsive to moderate and heavy exercise regimens having 3-12 repetitions with varying weight loading, suggesting women need to have heavy loading cycle or workout in their resistance training routines, as it helps to build muscle and bone. Scientists Work To Detect Mysterious Neutrinos Livermore scientists are working to solve a 50-year-old question: Can neutrinos -- a particle that is relatively massless, has no electric charge yet is fundamental to the make-up of the universe -- transform from one type to another? YAFSE - train your beady eye on EB-eye The European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) this week launched its new website. Apparently, the web interface has been streamlined on the basis of user feedback. Nothing too exciting in that, except they have also upgraded their search engine and describe it as being at the centre of the site and exhaustive in [...] NASA'S Live Tropical Sea Surface Temperature Web Site Gives Climate, H Sea surface temperatures give scientists information about ocean currents, climate, climate change and how a hurricane may evolve. Now, NASA has a Web page that provides frequent updates on changing ocean temperatures. Britain to Spy on Cars Cameras will capture license plate numbers as autos roll by. Plus:. It's time to explore alternatives to drilling in ANWR. From the Wired News blog Autopia. Recursive Splicing: Carnegie Mellon University Research Reveals How Ce Important messages require accurate transmission. Big genes are especially challenging. During processing, introns (non-coding elements) are snipped out and exons (coding segments) pasted together to form a template for proteins. How a cell's molecular machinery eliminates introns without making errors has puzzled scientists for years. Now, investigators at Carnegie Mellon have discovered that a novel mechanism removes long introns by steadily paring them down in a predictable fashion and joining the remaining exons. Cholesterol drug withdrawal symptoms According to the FierceBiotech pharma newsletter, Pfizer has been forced to halt development of its cholesterol drug Torcetrapib. The report says that the Data Safety Monitoring Board recommended the withdrawal of the drug from trials because of an “imbalance of mortality and cardiovascular events”.I presume that’s management speak for “too many patients were having heart [...] Kodak EasyShare V1253: DSLR Performance, Point-and-Shoot Price Review: The palm-sized Kodak EasyShare camera makes the reviewer giddy.
