Gene Chip Discovery May Lead To Individualized Treatment For 5 Heredit
Researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center have developed the first gene chip to use in the early diagnosis of at least five hereditary liver diseases, to detect genetic causes of jaundice in children and adults, and potentially to lead to personalized treatment options.

No Matter Their Size Black Holes 'Feed' In The Same Way
Research by UK astronomers reveals that the processes at work in black holes of all sizes are the same and that supermassive black holes are simply scaled up versions of small Galactic black holes. For many years astronomers have been trying to understand the similarities between stellar-mass sized Galactic black hole systems and the supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN).

A Kiss That Binds: Understanding The Interaction Of Fragile X Mental R
Fragile X syndrome results from loss of expression of the Fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP), the product of the FMR1 gene. Now, Drs. Robert and Jennifer Darnell and colleagues, from The Rockefeller University, report the uncovering of a new interaction between FMRP and messenger RNAs (mRNAs) containing a tertiary RNA structure termed a "kissing complex".

Rare Eye-movement Disorder May Shed Light On Brain And Cardiovascular
Researchers have identified a rare genetic syndrome affecting eye movement -- affecting three distinct populations -- that raises intriguing questions about early cardiovascular and brain development. The syndrome affects a gene involved in very early embryonic development that has been extensively studied in mice, but about which little has been known in humans.

Portable Radiation Detectors Generally Meet Standards
Portable radiation detectors generally perform well enough to meet new consensus standards but provide inaccurate readings for certain types of radiation, according to recent tests by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Astronomers Find Highly Elliptical Disk Around Young Star
Dust and debris parade in an extremely misshapen ring around the young star, HD 15115. The disk, seen edge-on with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, is the dense blue line extending from the star to the upper right and lower left of the image. The disk appears thicker at upper right than at lower left, evidence of its lopsided structure. Astronomers think the disk's needle-like look is caused by dust particles following a highly elliptical orbit around the star.

Low-cost Alternative Drugs Can Help Patients With Problems Controlling
Two inexpensive but widely overlooked drugs may help many patients who continue to have high blood pressure despite taking standard blood pressure medications, according to research by Indiana University School of Medicine scientists. The two drugs work by limiting the amount of sodium the kidneys reabsorb or take back into the body during the process of producing urine.

Acupuncture Relieves Pain And Improves Function In Knee Osteoarthritis
Acupuncture provides pain relief and improves function for people with osteoarthritis of the knee and serves as an effective complement to standard care. This landmark study was funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), both components of the National Institutes of Health.
