[Ironic] LONDON: A jailed cocaine dealer is working as Santa Claus on John Tams, who dons beard, boots and red suit to work in a cafe's Christmas grotto, said he wanted to give something back to the community... Scientists Leverage Robotic Diagnostic Technology To Diagnose Plant Di Agricultural Research Service (ARS) plant pathologist William Schneider has used, or is familiar with, just about every kind of method of identifying organisms that cause plant diseases, from light microscopes to so-called genetic fingerprinting. Each has its place in the field of disease diagnostics. But what's really excited Schneider is a procedure called TIGER, short for "Triangulation Identification for Genetic Evaluation of Risks." Designed Peptides: Candidates For The Treatment Of Cancer, Sexual Dysf Chemists at The University of Arizona have designed molecules based on natural peptide hormones, which regulate many biological functions. The compounds are promising drug candidates for the treatment of a variety of diseases, including eating disorders (anorexia, obesity), diabetes, sexual dysfunction and skin cancer. Some of the compounds are being evaluated in pre-clinical and clinical trials. UA chemist Victor Hruby will present the findings in a talk at the 230th American Chemical Society National Meeting in Washington, DC, on Aug 31, 2005. New Study Explores Patterns In Species Diversity And Genetic Diversity A new study by Mark Vellend in the August 2005 issue of the American Naturalist is the first to provide a theoretical model showing that the two central measures of biodiversity -- the number of species in a system and the number of genetic variants within a specific species -- respond similarly to changes in their environment. Tufts Nutrition Scientists Say It Is Premature To Focus On Nutrient Su In a special communication piece that appears in the July 20th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association(JAMA), Alice Lichtenstein, DSc, senior scientist and director of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory at the Jean Mayer U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University and the Center's director and senior scientist, Robert Russell, MD, report that the most promising data on nutrition and optimal health outcomes relate to dietary patterns, not nutrient supplements. GMOs Next Global Lightning Rod Issue Our ability to tinker with nature has outstripped our ability to regulate what we create, says Yves Tiberghien, a political scientist who specializes in global regulatory mechanisms for technology and trade. Consider that almost 70 per cent of the products we buy at the grocery store contain genetically engineered food. Yet we don't know their long-term impact on our health, the environment, or how they may tip the future balance of power in the global economy. WhiteHouseTapes.org at the Miller Center of Public Affairs "Between 1940 and 1973, six American presidents [Franklin D. Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon] from both political parties secretly recorded just under 5,000 hours of conversations. This site is designed as a service to the research community by making freely available all of the presidential recordings, along with relevant research materials"Also includes topical pages using conversations. From the Presidential Recordings Program at the University of Virginia's Miller Center of Public Affairs. Tailoring Depression Treatment For Each Individual When a treatment works for one person's depression, it does not always work for another person's. Findings may one day help doctors have a better idea of who will benefit from specific antidepressants, increasing the likelihood of successful treatment.
