A new study shows that taking in smoky air and drinking alcohol basically nullify any potential heart benefit from drinking alcohol by itself. Researchers found that mice exposed to smoky air and fed a liquid diet containing ethanol, the intoxicating ingredient in alcohol, had a 4.7-fold increase in artery lesions, a key sign of advancing heart disease. Researchers have developed technology to detect tumor cells within the human body. By shining a laser on surface veins, such as those on the wrist and inside the cheek, researchers are able to reveal and count circulating tumor cells. New Synthetic Version Of Clot Preventing Drug Heparin Created
Researchers have patented a synthetic version of the drug heparin, called Recomparin, that is less complex chemically and should be easier to produce than previous forms. Heparin is most commonly used to prevent clots from forming and restricting the flow of blood during and after procedures such as kidney dialysis, heart-bypass surgery, stent implantation and knee and hip replacement. The annual worldwide sales of heparin are estimated at $3 billion. Promising Treatment Target Found In Hodgkin Lymphoma
Scientists have identified a protein that prevents the body's immune system from recognizing and attacking Hodgkin lymphoma cells. Based on this finding, the researchers are now investigating targeted therapies to disable this molecular "bodyguard"and boost a patient's ability to fight the blood cancer.
