Scientists Follow Familiar 'TRAIL'To New Cancer Therapy
A new study identifies a combination therapy that may sensitize human cancer cells to a promising treatment currently being used in clinical trials. The research provides a pharmacological method for enhancing the potency and effectiveness of a tumor necrosis factor death receptor ligand against a variety of human cancers.

Icelandic Volcano Caused Historic Famine In Egypt, Study Shows
An environmental drama played out on the world stage in the late 18th century when a volcano killed 9,000 Icelanders and brought a famine to Egypt that reduced the population of the Nile valley by a sixth. A study by three scientists demonstrates a connection between these two widely separated events, and is the first to conclusively establish the linkage between high-latitude eruptions and the water supply in North Africa.

Whimpers From The Sun?
Solar physicists have observed the smallest ever coronal mass ejection (CME) -- a type of explosion where plasma from the Sun is thrown out into space, sometimes striking the Earth and damaging orbiting satellites. The observation has come as a great surprise to scientists and has turned previous ideas up-side-down.

A submersible robot can harvest timber from long-forgotten underwater forests. Clear-cutting never looked so green. By Michael Behar from Wired magazine.

Penn Researchers Provide Recommendations For Artificial Nutrition And
For two decades, doctors have followed an ethically-established agreement about the appropriate use of artificial nutrition and hydration (ANH) for patients who are seriously ill or in a persistent vegetative state. The Terri Schiavo case -- which included very open, dramatic disagreements among family members over such considerations -- publicly challenged long-held agreements about ANH and caused many to question its proper use. In response to such challenges, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania's Institute on Aging and Center for Bioethics, and the Philadelphia VA's Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion review and clarify ethical principles regarding the use of ANH.

Witnessing The Flash From A Black Hole's Cannibal Act
An international team of astronomers reports the discovery of a third short gamma-ray burst, associated with a nearby elliptical galaxy. The low level of star formation in such galaxies and the detection of a second long-lasting flare indicate that this gamma-ray burst is most likely the final scream of a neutron star as it is being devoured by a black hole.

Left Main Coronary Artery Disease Can Double Or Triple Heart Risk In S
Researchers have found that heart disease of the left main coronary artery is often an inherited condition that clusters in families. Moreover, they discovered that initially healthy siblings of a person with the condition were 2.5 times more likely to go on to develop some form of heart disease than were siblings of a patient with heart disease that did not relate to the left main coronary artery, according to a new article.

Noise Can Help, Rather Than Hinder, People's Ability To Sense Things
We usually think of noise as a bad thing -- like the background sound of street traffic that makes it hard to hear a conversation or your favorite CD. Researchers know that such extraneous stimuli exist for other senses, too: Noise can affect your ability not only to hear, but also to see and feel.

Beetle Bonds
Palm beetles cling to leaves using an adhesive that could theoretically hold one hundred times the insect's body weight, but can be "switched off" almost instantaneously to allow the beetle to move on. Researchers are now exploiting the underlying chemistry to make new switchable adhesives.
