Astronomers Find Highly Elliptical Disk Around Young Star Dust and debris parade in an extremely misshapen ring around the young star, HD 15115. The disk, seen edge-on with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, is the dense blue line extending from the star to the upper right and lower left of the image. The disk appears thicker at upper right than at lower left, evidence of its lopsided structure. Astronomers think the disk's needle-like look is caused by dust particles following a highly elliptical orbit around the star. Mini Generator Has Enough Power To Run Electronics It may be tiny, but a new microgenerator developed at Georgia Tech can now produce enough power to run a small electronic device, like a cell phone, and may soon be able to power a laptop. The microgenerator is about 10 millimeters wide, or about the size of a dime. When coupled with a similarly sized gas-fueled microturbine (or jet) engine, the system, called a microengine, has the potential to deliver more energy and last 10 times longer than a conventional battery. Fewer Fish Discarded After Individual Transferable Quotas Offered Contradicting previous assumptions, new fisheries research shows that allocating catch among vessels reduces the amount of fish discarded at sea. The study in Canada's British Columbia waters compared so-called individual transferable quotas with a previously used system of trip limits where vessels are only allowed to land a certain quantity of each species every two months. Lakes Boiling With Methane Discovered In Alaska A lake in Alaska was found violently boiling with escaping methane. Scientists are studying methane emissions from arctic lakes, especially the connection between thawing permafrost and climate change. As permafrost around a lake's edges thaws, the organic material in it -- dead plants and animals -- can enter the lake bottom, where bacteria convert it to methane, which bubbles into the atmosphere, sometimes in a spectacular fashion. Methane hotspots can come from various sources, not just thawing permafrost.
