All Eukaryotic Kinases Share One Common Set Of Substrates A team of researchers has established that all eukaryotic kinases share a common set of substrates, nine amino acid segments shared by all proteins that are known to be phosphorylated. Invertebrate Immune Systems Are Anything But Simple A hundred years since microbiologists first discovered the invertebrate immune system, they are just beginning to understand its complexity. Scientists recently discovered that invertebrates have evolved elaborate ways to fight disease. Researchers Find Pathways Linking Caloric Restriction To Aging Process Researchers at the University of Washington have found a genetic pathway linking nutrient response and the aging process, they report in the Nov. 18 issue of the journal Science. Scientists have long known that dramatically reducing food intake boosts the lifespan of model organisms such as mice, but the new results point to a possible mechanism through which drastic calorie restriction affects aging. Survey of Mexican Migrants, Part Two: Attitudes About Voting in Mexica This survey, released in March 2005, reports that of the "nearly 5,000 Mexican migrants who were interviewed while applying for identity cards at Mexican consulates in the United States ... an overwhelming majority would vote in Mexican elections scheduled for next year if they had the opportunity."Includes a summary and the complete report. From the Pew Hispanic Center. Counselling Conquers Constipation Psychological factors can make people more likely to suffer physical illness, but cognitive behavioural therapy can help sufferers manage their condition. "People often pigeonhole diseases as being biological or psychological, but in fact they're often a complex mixture of both,"according to a researcher. She and her colleagues studied 1000 people who contracted either glandular fever or food poisoning. They wanted to see who would go on to develop irritable bowel syndrome. Deaf and Disabled Telecommunications Program (DDTP) Website for this California state mandated program, under the governance of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), that consists of "the California Relay Service [CRS] which includes Speech to Speech and the California Telephone Access Program [CTAP] which provides assistive telecommunications equipment."Features FAQs, program highlights, and updates about the CRS and CTAP. Also includes links to related sites. Scra-Scra-Scratching Thin Air Researchers have cooked up a new tool for digital DJs: a device that converts movement into music. Clubs may soon be MC'd by DJs who produce the signature scratch sound by waving their arms in the air. By Jonny Evans. How Nutrition Affects The Breakdown Of Fats Scientists have shown that when either lean or obese individuals exercise after eating a high fat meal, their fats are broken down and oxidized in skeletal muscle, making them healthier. These results show for the first time how a high fat diet and exercise stimulate the breakdown of fats and may help design ways to reduce excessive fat in the body. Fat is broken down inside fat cells to generate energy by a process called lipolysis. The resulting fatty acids are released into the bloodstream and carried to tissues that require energy. What Makes Some People Impulsive? Area Responsible For 'Self-control'F The area of the brain responsible for self-control -- where the decision not to do something occurs after thinking about doing it -- is separate from the area associated with taking action, scientists have found. The findings broaden understanding of the neural basis for decision making, or free will, and may help explain why some individuals are impulsive while others are reluctant to act. Human Derived Stem Cells Can Repair Rat Hearts Damaged By Heart Attack When human heart muscle cells derived from embryonic stem cells are implanted into a rat after a heart attack, they can help rebuild the animal's heart muscle and improve function of the organ, scientists report. The researchers also developed a new process that greatly improves how stem cells are turned into heart muscle cells and then survive after being implanted in the damaged rat heart.
