Stellar Tiramisu: Astronomers Find Hints of Distant Planetary Pollutio
Looking at the chemical composition of stars that host planets, astronomers have found that while dwarf stars often show iron enrichment on their surface, giant stars do not. The astronomers think that the planetary debris falling onto the outer layer of the star produces a detectable effect in a dwarf star, but this pollution is diluted by the giant star and mixed into its interior.

Scientists Discover That Three Molecules May Be Developed Into New Alz
A team of scientists has discovered three molecules -- from a search of 58,000 compounds -- that appear to inhibit a key perpetrator of Alzheimer's disease. Each of the three molecules protects the protein called "tau,"which becomes hopelessly tangled in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's. The finding is promising news for the development of drugs for the disease.

Failing Mouse Hearts Safely Regenerated With Programmed Embryonic Stem
Mayo Clinic researchers have safely transplanted cardiac preprogrammed embryonic stem cells into diseased hearts of mice successfully regenerating infarcted heart muscle without precipitating the growth of a cancerous tumor -- which, so far, has impeded successful translation into practice of embryonic stem cell research.

New Chimeric Mouse Model For Human Liver Diseases, Drug Testing
Cells cultured in the lab are like a fish out of water. Often, their behavior does not reflect their biological function within an entire organ or organism, which, for example, turns studying human liver cells into a big challenge.

Body's Own Marijuana-like Compounds Are Crucial For Stress-induced Pai
A new study shows, for the first time, that the release of the body's own marijuana-like compounds is crucial to stress-induced analgesia -- the body's way of initially shielding pain after a serious injury. The work, led by scientists at the University of Georgia and the University of California, Irvine, may yield a target for new drug therapies that will completely bypass the current arguments over the use of medical marijuana.

New Evidence Finds An Association Between Periodontal Disease And Stro
People missing some or all of their teeth or who have significant loss of bone and tissue surrounding their teeth may be at an increased risk for having a stroke, according to a new study that appeared in the October issue of the Journal of Periodontology (JOP).

Software: Serious Games In Virtual Worlds
Serious games are designed not to entertain, but to teach. Students learn by doing, and games range from simulating medical procedures to promoting peace in Palestine. Now researchers are developing a platform to make the concept more accessible to businessmen. You cannot replace experience, but maybe you can acquire it faster. Action learning, learning by doing, is the most effective form of training a company can deploy. Instead of remembering facts or processes, students perform real tasks, employing both the knowledge and the method as they do. It is the difference between reading the manual and building the machine. It is experience over information.

Eye-staining Technique Offers Early Detection For Dry Eye Syndrome
Lissamine green sounds like the latest cleaning sensation being hawked on television and probably not something you would want to get in your eyes. But a few properly placed drops can reveal staining patterns that are key to diagnosing dry eye syndrome earlier than other methods, providing doctors more options for treating the potentially sight-stealing disease, new research confirms.
