Method Holds Promise In Identifying Markers Of Non-metastatic Vs. Meta
Researchers at the University of California, San Diego have used a new strategy to identify differences between non-metastatic and highly metastatic breast cancer cells. The deaths or clinical complications in heart attack patients given potent drugs to re-open clogged arteries is more likely to be due to individual patient characteristics than to modest misdosing of the drugs, researchers from the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) have determined. Thus, they said, physicians should not be overly worried about the possibility of minor errors in dosing -- a concern that the Duke physicians said likely contributes to insufficient prescribing of the drugs to treat heart attacks. Low oxygen levels in coastal waters interfere with fish reproduction by disrupting the fishes'hormones, a marine scientist has found. Incidents of seasonal low levels of oxygen, known as hypoxia, have increased dramatically in coastal waters throughout the world over the past few decades, largely as a result of increased run-off from human agricultural and industrial activities. An invasion of American beach grass is under way along the Oregon coast, threatening to change dune ecology and reduce the ability of dunes to protect roads, property and towns from coastal storms. Scientists have documented a slow but steady takeover by this beach grass, an invasive species. They found that protective "foredunes"covered by the new grass species are only about half as high as those created by the European species of grass that were formerly dominant.
