Researchers Publish Dog Genome Sequence; Analysis Sheds Light On Human An international team, led by researchers at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, today announced the publication of the genome sequence of the dog. In the Dec. 8 issue of the journal Nature, the researchers present a detailed analysis of the dog genome and describe how the data offer the potential for improving the health of man and man's best friend. A Giant Step Toward Tiny Functional Nanowires A team of Northwestern University scientists turned to chemistry and developed a new method that can routinely and cheaply produce nanowires with gaps as small as five nanometers wide -- a feat that is unattainable using conventional lithographic techniques. New Molecular Regulators Of Hyperthyroidism And Goiter Thyroid gland function is regulated by the hormone TSH. Increased levels of TSH and increased signaling through its receptor cause hyperthyroidism and goiter. Signals downstream of the receptor for TSH were thought to be mediated mainly by the Gs protein complex. A new study now indicates that in mice Gq/G11-mediated signaling has an essential role in transmitting TSH-induced signals. This makes Gq and G11 potential new targets for the treatment of hyperthyroidism and goiter. NASA's Spitzer Digs Up Troves Of Possible Solar Systems In Orion Astronomers have long scrutinized the vast and layered clouds of the Orion nebula, an industrious star-making factory visible to the naked eye in the sword of the famous hunter constellation. Yet, Orion is still full of secrets. A new image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope probes deep into the clouds of dust that permeate the nebula and its surrounding regions. Breast Cancer Linked To Pesticide DDT, Study Suggests High levels of the primary component of DDT, in women exposed before mid-adolescence, were found to be predict a five-fold increase in breast cancer risk. Many American women heavily exposed to DDT in childhood have not yet reached 50 years of age, therefore the public health significance of DDT exposure in early life may be large. New Study Shows Women More Vulnerable To Risk Of Colorectal Cancer Fro A new study of gender and risk factors for colorectal cancer reveals that while both tobacco and alcohol increase risk for colorectal cancer, women who smoke are at higher risk. [Ironic] LONDON: A jailed cocaine dealer is working as Santa Claus on John Tams, who dons beard, boots and red suit to work in a cafe's Christmas grotto, said he wanted to give something back to the community... Radiologists Encouraged To Look Beyond Cancer For Clinically Unseen Di Radiologists can diagnose venous thromboembolic disease in cancer patients earlier by looking more carefully at CT scans of the thorax, abdomen and pelvis which are regularly done to determine the extent or stage of the cancer, according to a recent study. New Study Explains Process Leading To Many Proteins From One Gene New findings from researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center help explain how the 20,000 to 25,000 genes in the human genome can make the hundreds of thousands of different proteins in our bodies. Holiday Feasting Could Sabotage Liposuction Results Although liposuction is mistakenly viewed by some as a "quick fix"for weight loss, liposuction patients are 3 times more likely to gain weight without adhering to a proper diet and 4 times more likely to gain weight without regular exercise says a study published in the December issue of Plastic and Reconstructive SurgeryŽ, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
