Cincinnatus

Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus was Roman consul in 460 BC and dictator twice, in 458 BC and 439 BC. His first term as dictator began when Rome was being menaced by the Aequi tribe from the east and the Volscians from the southeast. The Roman Senate pleaded with Cincinnatus to assume the mantle of dictator to save the city. The career of Cincinnatus has become so tied up in legend that extracting actual events is impossible. According to the annalists, Cincinnatus had settled into a life of farming and knew that his departure could mean starvation for his family if the crops went unsown in his absence. He assented to the request anyway and within sixteen days had defeated the Aequi and the Voslcians. His immediate resignation of his absolute authority with the end of the crisis has often been cited as an example of good leadership, service to the public good, and the virtue of modesty.

He came out of retirement during his second term as dictator (439 BC) to put down a revolt by the plebians.

The town of Cincinnato, Italy, and the city of Cincinnati, OH, USA, are named in his honor.

Protein May Link Obesity To Diabetes 2
Obesity increases the risk of developing diabetes, but nobody knows the details of why this is the case. Researchers have now identified a protein that may play a role in increasing the risk. The discovery may in the long term lead to new methods of preventing type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is a metabolic condition in which the body does not form sufficient quantities of insulin or in which the insulin that is formed does not have sufficient effect. The most common form of the disease is type 2 diabetes, which is the variant that adults can develop.

Support Groups Don't Extend Survival Of Metastatic Breast Cancer Patie
A new Stanford University study shows that participating in support groups doesn't extend the lives of women with metastatic breast cancer. The results differ from oft-cited previous findings that showed group psychotherapy extended survival time. The newest research did, however, confirm that support groups improved quality of life for the participants, and showed a survival benefit for a subgroup of patients with an aggressive form of breast cancer.

Humanitarian Assistance Often Lacks Needs Assessment

More 'Functional'DNA In Genome Than Previously Thought
Surrounding the small islands of genes within the human genome is a vast sea of mysterious DNA. While most of this non-coding DNA is junk, some of it is used to help genes turn on and off. As reported online this week in Genome Research, Hopkins researchers have now found that this latter portion, which is known as regulatory DNA and contributes to inherited diseases like Parkinson's or mental disorders, may be more abundant than we realize.
