Solar Flare Keeps Space Agencies Busy An energetic storm on the Sun has forced ESA mission controllers to react to anomalies or take action to avoid damage to spacecraft. Several missions, including Integral, Cluster and Envisat, felt the storm's effects, highlighting the need for ESA's ongoing development of space weather forecasting tools. Quality Counts 2007: From Cradle to Career: Connecting American Educat Collection of articles and data from January 2007 "track[ing] state efforts to create seamless education systems from early childhood to the world of work."Features articles on topics such as "Gauging Student Learning"and "Linking Learning to Earning,"and the "Chance for Success Index,"which provides state-by-state data on 13 individual indicators (such as family income and preschool enrollment). From Education Week magazine with support from the Pew Center on the States. New, Hands-on Science Demos Teach Young Students How Volcanoes 'Blow T Geologists at Rutgers University have created three hands-on demonstrations that show how heat and pressure underground move rocks and earth to build up volcanic mountains, and in some cases, cause them to literally blow their tops. These activities, which depict the actual forces that caused Washington's Mt. St. Helens to blow or Hawaii's Kilauea to spew red-hot rivers of lava, captivate kids while giving them a foundation for studying earth science in high school. New Report Says Human Tampering Threatens Planet's Life-sustaining Sur In a new report, scientists call for a new systematic study of the Earth's "critical zone"-- the life-sustaining outermost surface of the planet, from the vegetation canopy to groundwater and everything in between. Understanding and predicting responses to global and regional change is necessary, they say, to mitigate the impacts of humans on complex ecosystems and ultimately sustain food production. Hearing Loss In Older Adults May Compromise Cognitive Resources For Me In a new study, Brandeis University researchers conclude that older adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss may expend so much cognitive energy on hearing accurately that their ability to remember spoken language suffers as a result. Bacteria Can Cheat On Their Mates Pursuing our own short term interests by cheating on the rest of the population is not the preserve of the human race. It seems bacteria can operate in just the same way. Scientists say bacteria have another trait that might be familiar to us -- cooperating for the good of their own family. Greater Deficits In Emotional Facial Expression Can Indicate More Seve Recognition of emotional facial expressions (EFEs) is a key form of non-verbal communication that is lacking among alcoholics. New findings show continuing EFE decoding deficits among alcoholics even after three months of abstinence. Alcoholics with the worst EFE decoding performance at initial assessment not only dropped out of treatment, but all of them later relapsed. The Real Adult Expo Sex-tech is emerging from the fringe to the middle of the main convention floor. But where are the webcams? Commentary by Regina Lynn. SMART-1 Impact Flash And Debris: Crash Scene Investigation On The Moon Timing, location, detection of a flash and of ejected material, and a firework generated by the lunar impact of ESA's SMART-1, are the latest results gathered thanks to the ground observation campaign of this historical event. Scientists Create New Way To Study T Cell Signaling Researchers with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory created unique synthetic membranes that, for the first time ever, enabled them to directly control signalingactivity in living T cells from the immune system. By going inside a living cell and physically moving its T cell signaling molecules, they showed that the "bull's eye"of an immunological synapse, long thought to amplify T cell signalling, actually works to extinguish the signal.
