Enormous Spider Web Found In Texas A massive spider web first spotted covering several acres of oak-elm woodlands along a Lake Tawakoni State Park trail in early August made national and international headlines throughout the Labor Day Weekend. Stumped as to the web's origin, the initial consensus of arachnologists and entomologists who saw an online photo of the web sent by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologist Mike Quinn was that it may have resulted from a "mass dispersal"event. In such an event, millions of tiny spiders or spiderlings spin out silk filaments to ride air currents in a phenomenon known as "ballooning." NASA Study Finds Earth's Auroras Are Not Mirror Images Scientists looking at the Earth's northern and southern auroras were surprised to find they are not mirror images of each other, as was once thought. Nearby Barred Spiral Galaxy Shows Off Its Warped Disc Just like our own Galaxy, NGC 134 is a barred spiral galaxy with its spiral arms loosely wrapped around a bright, bar-shaped central region. One feature that stands out is its warped disc. While a galaxy's disc is often pictured as a flat structure of gas and stars surrounding the galaxy's centre, a warped disc is a structure that, when viewed sideways, resembles a bent record album left out too long in the burning Sun. Friendly Foe: Bacteria Residing In The Gut Boost Immune Response To Tu Total body irradiation (TBI), which depletes the body of lymphocytes, improves the ability of tumor-specific T cells to cause tumor regression. In a new JCI study researchers show that, in mice, lymphodepletion does not fully account for the tumor regression observed following TBI. They show that disruption of the population of bacteria that normally reside in the gut without causing disease also plays a role in the effectiveness of this therapeutic approach against cancer.
