Clayton is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,762.

census2 of 2000, there are 10,762 people, 3,883 households, and 3,207 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,054.6/km² (2,729.3/mi²). There are 3,924 housing units at an average density of 384.5/km² (995.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.95% White, 1.12% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 5.38% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 1.54% from other races, and 3.73% from two or more races. 6.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,883 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.6% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.4% are non-families. 13.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.04. In the city the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 31.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $101,651, and the median income for a family is $107,448. Males have a median income of $77,535 versus $50,279 for females. The per capita income for the city is $42,048. 2.6% of the population and 1.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 3.6% are under the age of 18 and 1.9% are 65 or older.
