Cleruchy

A cleruchy, in Hellenic Greece, was the result of the exportation of excess and generally impoverished populations to colonies or special settlements of citizens. Under the cleruchy arrangement, the participating citizen received a plot of agricultural land, hence a means to earn his livelihood. The Athenian democracy benefited in three ways:

  • The reduction of population pressure in Athens itself
  • The overawing of recalcitrant allies, as the cleruchs formed miliary garrisons
  • The appropriation of property to Athenian citizens

Protein May Play A Role In Severe Asthma
A protein measured in a simple blood test may be a new biomarker to identify patients with the most serious form of asthma. Identifying this new biomarker, YKL-40, brings investigators one step closer to a treatment for the nation's 2.5 million asthmatics with a severe form of the disease that is difficult to treat, the researchers say.

Guilt, Fear Loneliness Afflict Families And Caregivers After Medical E
Guilt, fear and loneliness often afflict both the caregiver and the family in the aftermath of a medical error, feelings that can be overcome if all parties try to build bridges and develop solutions that not only can prevent error but lead to forgiveness.

Balancing Act Protects Vulnerable Cells From Cancer
When a cell loses some of its weapons to fight cancer, it can still look healthy and act normally -- if not forever, at least for a while. scientists show how cells lacking a key receptor in a tumor-suppressing pathway maintain a balance between cell growth and cell death, how they lose this balance and why this loss happens more frequently in some tissues than in others.

Progress In Coronary Disease Death Rates Grinds To Near Halt In Young
Before you plop in front of the television for a day of football, pizza and beer, you might consider this: New research shows that in young adults, decades of hard-won progress in reducing the risk of heart disease appears to be stalling, as recent death rates from coronary disease remain almost unchanged in young men and may even be increasing in women.

Daytime Sleepiness From Obstructive Sleep Apnea May Raise Risk For Car
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a sleep related breathing disorder that causes your body to stop breathing during sleep, can disturb your sleep numerous times on any given night. As a result, you may experience daytime sleepiness. Daytime sleepiness brought on by OSA may put you more at risk for cardiovascular problems, according to a study published in the December 1st issue of the journal SLEEP.

UCLA Chemists Create Nano Valve
UCLA chemists have created the first nano valve that can be opened and closed at will to trap and release molecules. A nano valve potentially could be used as a drug delivery system.

Sugar Metabolism Tracked In Living Plant Tissues, In Real Time
Scientists at Carnegie's Department of Plant Biology have made the first real-time observations of sugars in the cells of intact and living plant tissues. The groundbreaking imaging techniques will enable new studies of sugar metabolism in plants, which should inform the effort to engineer higher crop yields for food and biofuel production.

Controlling Bandwidth In The Clouds
Computer scientists have designed, implemented, and evaluated a new bandwidth management system for cloud-based applications capable of solving the problem of lack of bandwidth control. The new algorithm enables distributed rate limiters to work together to enforce global bandwidth rate limits, and dynamically shift bandwidth allocations across multiple sites or networks, according to current network demand.
