Physical Therapy In ICU Can Reduce Hospital Stays A new study shows the effectiveness of early physical therapy in a medical intensive care unit. The length of stay for a group of respiratory-failure patients who received mobility therapy within 48 hours of the insertion of a breathing tube was reduced by an average of three days compared to the stay for patients who did not receive the therapy. This reduced length of stay included a reduction of time in the ICU of more than a day. Different Areas Of The Brain Respond To Belief, Disbelief And Uncertai Using fMRI, researchers have identified clear differences in the areas of the brain involved in belief, disbelief, and uncertainty. This finding has implications for the detection of deception, for the control of the placebo effect during drug design, and for the study of any higher cognitive phenomenon in which the differences among belief, disbelief and uncertainty might be relevant. Genetic Diversity In Honeybee Colonies Boosts Productivity Honeybee queens tend to be promiscuous to produce genetically diverse colonies, report two Cornell researchers in Science. Such colonies are far more productive and hardy than genetically uniform colonies produced by monogamous queens, they report. Medium-sized Polyps Yield Significant Number Of Advanced Adenomas And According to a University of Pittsburgh-led study published in the December issue of Gastroenterology, medium-sized polyps found in the colon with flexible sigmoidoscopy and subsequently evaluated by full colonoscopy are associated with a significant number of advanced adenomas (high-risk polyps) and cancers. Gallstone Gene Discovered: Gene Variant Causes Two- To Three-fold Incr Scientists have discovered a gene variant that significantly increases the risk of developing gallstones. It is estimated that one in ten Europeans has this variant in their hereditary disposition. For those affected, the likelihood of developing a gallstone in the course of their life is two to three times higher. New Gene Scanning Technology Marks A Major Advance In Disease Research Gene scanning techniques developed by Professor Ian Day and colleagues at the University of Southampton are set to have a major impact on healthcare in the future. Their method, called meltMADGE, which combines thermal ramp electrophoresis with microplate array diagonal gel electrophoresis (MADGE), enables significantly higher levels of scanning at a fraction of the cost. City Site Was Dinosaur Dining Room A dinosaur bone bed in southwest Edmonton that served as a feeding area for the direct ancestor of Tyrannosaurus rex has revealed that two dinosaurs, thought to have lived in different eras, actually lived at the same time. Scientists digging for bones at the site this year discovered fossils of Edmontosaurus and Saurolophus this year. NCI Begins Validation Study Of New Test To Detect Early--Stage Liver C A two-year study to validate a test to detect early-stage liver cancer has been initiated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, at six centers across the United States. This test, conceived with the assistance of NCI's Early Detection Research Network (EDRN), looks at whether a substance called des-gamma carboxyprothrombin (DCP) can identify those at risk for liver cancer.
