Fish Gene Sheds Light On Human Skin Color Variation With help from a common aquarium pet and a recently released online database of human genetic variation, a collaborative team of Penn State researchers has found what could be the most important skin color gene identified to date. The team found that a change in just one amino acid in one gene plays a major role in determining why people of European descent have lighter skin than people of African descent. Sierra Club Challenges Plan to Log Giant Sequoia National Monument This January 2005 press release describes efforts to "challenge the Bush administration's decision to log Giant Sequoia National Monument [in California] in federal court. The groups also encouraged the administration and the court to look to neighboring Sequoia National Park for a better way to manage the rare forest."Includes maps and photos, information about the giant sequoia of the southern Sierra, a lesson plan, and links to related sites. New Synthetic Version Of Clot Preventing Drug Heparin Created Researchers have patented a synthetic version of the drug heparin, called Recomparin, that is less complex chemically and should be easier to produce than previous forms. Heparin is most commonly used to prevent clots from forming and restricting the flow of blood during and after procedures such as kidney dialysis, heart-bypass surgery, stent implantation and knee and hip replacement. The annual worldwide sales of heparin are estimated at $3 billion. Selection Of Successful Sperms Influenced By Female Grey Mouse Lemurs In grey mouse lemurs from the dry deciduous forests in western Madagascar each female is receptive to mating for a single night per year. For male mouse lemurs this is a stressful time. What happens during this special night? Up to fourteen males visit a single female and females copulate with up to seven different males at maximum. But who will become father? The selection of successful sperms must be influenced by internal body mechanisms of the female after copulation. New Stem Cell Therapy Being Tested On Heart Patients Doctors treated the first patient in a new study to test whether a person's own stem cells can be used to restore blood flow to the heart by prompting new blood vessels to grow. Medical researchers plan to test the experimental therapy in people with severe coronary artery disease and daily chest pain who have not responded to traditional medications or surgical procedures designed to restore blood flow, such as angioplasty or bypass surgery.
