CLOS

The Common Lisp Object System, a powerful system for object-oriented programming which forms part of Common Lisp.

CLOS differs from most other object-oriented programming environments in the following ways:

  • It offers multiple dispatch, or "multimethods".
  • Therefore, methods are not considered to live within classes; they are conceptually grouped into generic functions instead.
  • CLOS doesn't provide encapsulation; that is considered to be the job of a different part of Common Lisp, the package system.
  • Inheritance can cause methods to be combined together in arbitrarily complicated ways at the discretion of the programmer, and not merely overridden by one another.

CLOS has multiple inheritance and, unofficially, a meta-object protocol.

New Process Promises To Reduce Costs Of A Clean-coal Technology
Scientists in China are reporting an advance in clean-coal technology that could substantially reduce the cost of producing clean-burning fuels from underground deposits of coal. In a study scheduled for the July 18 issue of ACS's Energy &Fuels, a bi-monthly publication, Lanhe Yang and colleagues focus on coal gasification, a process for making gaseous fuels, similar to natural gas, from coal.

Carving New Frontiers For Ion-Beam Technology
An ion-beam system that simultaneously combines focused beams of electrons and positive ions promises to improve the versatility, efficiency, and economy of this important technology. The new system was developed by researchers at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, who report its principles and applications in the November 8, 2004 issue of Applied Physics Letters.

Chemotherapy For Brain Tumors Is Boosted After Vaccine Targets Resista
Researchers at Cedars-Sinai's Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute recently documented that chemotherapy after immunotherapy provides significantly better results than either therapy can providealone. Now they offer an explanation for the relative effectiveness of this two-wave assault on malignant brain tumors: chemotherapy sensitivity may be dramatically increased by targeting antigens that are involved in making tumors drug resistant. Results of their study appear in the August issue of Oncogene.
