Coast

A coast is that part of an island or continent that borders an ocean, gulf, sea, or large lake. In geology and physical geography, the coast extends inland from the shoreline. The terms coast and coastal refer to the condition of being located on or near a coast. For example, Los Angeles is a coastal city; California, Oregon, and Washington are on the West Coast.

New Study Finds No Link Between Kawasaki Disease And Newly Discovered
A newly described virus is not a cause of Kawasaki disease, according to an article by a group of researchers in Denver, Colorado. The cause or causes of Kawasaki disease, an important pediatric infection that may lead to heart disease, have long been elusive. A study published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases last year by Jeffrey S. Kahn, MD, and colleagues at Yale University suggested that Kawasaki disease was associated with a new human coronavirus -- one of a family of viruses affecting the respiratory tract. As an accompanying editorial pointed out then, the association required confirmation by other investigators.

After Combing The Scientific Literature, Researchers Conclude Head Hai
Mammals have fur over most of their bodies, but at some point during evolution, we humans lost that fur covering. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis argue that hair on the head is somehow different from fur because fur stops growing when it reaches a certain length, but our head hair continues to grow. To drive home their argument, they ask in a recent article in the journal Evolutionary Anthropology, "Have you ever seen a chimpanzee getting a haircut?"

Rare cattle and human hybrids
Is it just me or is there a certain irony to be found in the timing of a rare cattle and other animal breeds conservation initiative being announced in the UK and stem cell researchers at Newcastle University requesting authorisation to hybridize nuclear-free eggs from cows with a human skin cell nucleus?Ironic or not, both [...]

Human Muscle-derived Stem Cells Effective In Animal Models Of Incontin
Human muscle-derived cells, pluripotent stem cells found in muscle, have been used to cure stress urinary incontinence in animal models, a finding which signals that these cells are prime candidates to treat the condition in adults. The research will be presented by University of Pittsburgh researchers at the annual meeting of the International Continence Society Aug. 29 through Sept. 2 in Montreal.
