Nutrition Scientists Take A Look At Cataract Prevention Researchers at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University recently sought, in three different studies, to determine if prevention of age-related cataracts is possible. Their findings suggest that vitamins and polyunsaturated fatty acids--two categories of nutrients believed to have health benefits--may both affect cataract development, although not necessarily in beneficial ways. HapMap Project: Human Gene Database Allows Identification Of Disease-a The second phase of the International HapMap Project, an effort to identify and catalog genetic similarities and differences among populations around the world, has been completed. Information provided in the first phase of the HapMap, completed in 2005, has led to the development of techniques facilitating the search for genes associated with common diseases -- such as schizophrenia and heart disease -- and the identification of more than 50 such disease-associated genes. New Study Discovers Why 'Persister' Cells Never Say Die Northeastern University biologist Kim Lewis has discovered the gene that prevents antibiotics from successfully destroying infections within biofilm. For years, scientists have struggled to understand why a certain type of infection -- known as biofilms -- are often resistant to antibiotics. Aboriginal Peoples This site provides information about the four peoples of Aboriginal ancestry who live in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador today: the Inuit, the Innu, the Micmac, and the Metis. From the Pew Hispanic Center. Results Promising For Computational Quantum Chemical Methods For Drug New research may someday help natural-products chemists decrease by years the amount of time it takes for the development of certain types of medicinal drugs. The research involves computations of optical rotation angles on chiral -- non-superimposable -- molecules. Many chiral molecules are important for medical treatment for illnesses ranging from acid-reflux to cancer. The term "chiral"means that two mirror images of a molecule cannot be superimposed onto each other. In other words, some are "left-handed"and some are "right-handed." Climate Change Irreversible? United Nations Chief Urges Breakthrough A United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has challenged the world's policymakers to start devising a comprehensive deal for tackling climate change at next month's summit in Bali, Indonesia, after a United Nations report released Nov. 17 found that global warming is unequivocal and could cause irreversible damage to the planet. Launching the fourth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which brings together hundreds of scientific experts, Mr. Ban said that slowing and even reversing the effects of climate change "is the defining challenge of our age."He also stressed the report makes clear that "concerted and sustained action now can still avoid some of the most catastrophic scenarios"in the IPCC forecasts. POTUS: Presidents of the United States This collection features "background information, election results, cabinet members, notable events, and some points of interest on each of the [U.S.] presidents.
