U.S. Food and Drug Administration: Recalls, Market Withdrawals, and Sa The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides information about "the most significant product actions of the last 60 days, based on the extent of distribution and the degree of health risk. The recalls on the list are mainly Class I [reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to product will cause serious adverse health consequences]."Products include food, drugs, and medical devices. Good thing the music industry is about more than selling plastic discs. Today's artists have surprising new ways to reach fans and make a living. David Byrne gives Wired readers a guided tour of what's next. Astronaut's Eyes May Become Windows On The Bloodstream Our eyes may become more than windows of the soul if a multidisciplinary team of University of Michigan researchers succeeds with a clever combination of nanoparticles and ultrafast pulsed laser to see individual cells as they zip past in the bloodstream. The Southeastern Louisiana University West Lake Pontchartrain Basin Re This program's goal is "to determine the ecological status of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin ecosystem and to provide scientific information ... on methods and policies to stabilize, sustain, and/or enhance its environmental and economic recovery."The website provides reports on the status of research on Louisiana's coastal forests and marshes, pollution in the Lake Pontchartrain Basin, and birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles, insects, mammals, and plants in the area. Freezing Bone Cancer Tumors Reduces Pain, Study Shows Cryoablation, a procedure most commonly associated with destroying kidney and prostate tumors by freezing them, has been shown to offer durable pain relief of cancer that has spread to bone. Support Groups Don't Extend Survival Of Metastatic Breast Cancer Patie A new Stanford University study shows that participating in support groups doesn't extend the lives of women with metastatic breast cancer. The results differ from oft-cited previous findings that showed group psychotherapy extended survival time. The newest research did, however, confirm that support groups improved quality of life for the participants, and showed a survival benefit for a subgroup of patients with an aggressive form of breast cancer. National Flag Day of Canada, February 15 /Jour du Drapeau du Canada, L The maple leaf flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on February 15, 1965, as the national flag of Canada. Includes a history of the flag, flag facts, a quiz, and PDF versions of the Proclamation of the National Flag of Canada and the Declaration of National Flag Day ("suitable for display and/or framing"). Breast Cancer Risk: Breast Density Gene Located Studying the DNA of 889 people, gene hunters have identified a region on chromosome 5p that is significantly associated with dense breast tissue, a known risk factor for breast cancer. The study suggests that genes which influence breast density could serve as a predictive marker for disease and provide a biological target for agents that may reduce breast cancer risk by reducing breast density. Women with dense breasts -- meaning the breast has a smaller proportion of fat relative to stromal and epithelial tissues - are three to five times more likely to develop breast cancer than women with less dense breasts. Study On Toxin That Tainted Spinach, Shiga Toxin, Reveals Treatment Po If you've survived Shiga toxin and the after-effects of food poisoning, you may have been the innocent victim of a battle for survival between predator and prey. Bacteria that carry a virus (a bacteriophage) that packs the Shiga toxin gene (Stx) may depend on it for protection from bacterial predators like the ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena. A discovery by University at Buffalo biologists that may explain the evolution of a lethal toxin is providing new information that could lead to more effective treatments for humans who fall victim to it. University of California: California Residency Information Information about the residency requirements to qualify for in-state tuition fees while attending the University of California. "To be considered a California resident for purposes of fees, an out-of-state student must have lived in California for more than one year preceding the residence determination date, relinquish residence in other states, show an intent to establish residency in California and demonstrate financial independence."Includes links to information for individual campuses.
