Satellite Images Reveal State Of Health Of World's Coral Reefs A first-of-its-kind survey of how well the world's coral reefs are being protected was made possible by a unique collection of NASA views from space. A team of international researchers using NASA satellite images compiled an updated inventory of all "marine protected areas"containing coral reefs and compared it with the most detailed and comprehensive satellite inventory of coral reefs. Early Treatment Of Macular Degeneration With Macugen May Help Patients The study found that early detection and treatment of age-related macular degeneration with pegaptanib sodium may enable AMD patients to maintain and, in some cases, regain vision. Wake Up, Doc: Lack Of Sleep Affects Young Doctors Just Like Alcohol Do The long hours and overnight shifts that are a rite of passage for young doctors may leave them so sleep-deprived that they function as poorly as if they'd had a few cocktails, a new study finds. Special Report: Famine A collection of articles about the 2005 famine in Niger and in neighboring country Mali. Includes information about humanitarian relief efforts, an eyewitness account, photos, and commentary about what "images of famine tell us about the relationship between the victims and those who picture them."From the Guardian Unlimited, the online companion to the British newspaper The Guardian. Research Finds People With Migraine Headaches Report More Angina, But People with a history of migraines and other headaches lasting at least four hours are more likely to report suffering from the chest pain doctors call angina than people who do not experience such headaches, a new University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill study concludes. That is especially true for those who also experience "aura"around the time of their headaches -- seeing what appear to be spots or lines before their eyes. New System For Earthquake Early Warning UC Berkeley seismologist Richard Allen has found that the frequency of P waves produced within the first four seconds of an earthquake provides enough information to estimate the ultimate magnitude of the earthquake. Using a system called ElarmS, Allen and colleagues are able to predict distant ground motion and send warnings to areas of potentially damaging shaking, providing seconds to tens of seconds of advance warning. Livestock Grazing Study Finds Moderate Grazing Beneficial To Great Bas Livestock grazing advocates may have new ammunition in the dispute over the long terms effects of livestock grazing. An article released this week in the Journal of Rangeland Management documents a comprehensive research project that looked for differences between grazed and un-grazed rangelands in Nevada. Familiar Songs Act As Strong Memory Cues, K-State Researcher Finds Memories associated with music are strong. So strong that even the mere mention of a song's title or a glimpse of the album cover can bring the recollections of a time or place flooding back. Battling Bacteria: Antimicrobial 'Hole Puncher'Mechanism Described In the battle against bacteria, researchers have scored a direct hit. They have deciphered the molecular mechanism behind selective antimicrobial activity for a prototypical class of synthetic compounds. The rapid development of bacterial resistance to conventional antibiotics (such as penicillin or vancomycin) has become a major public health concern. Because resistant strains of bacteria can arise faster than drug companies can create antibiotics, understanding how these molecules function could help companies narrow their focus on potential antibiotics and bring them to market sooner.
