Testing the Waters: A Guide to Water Quality at Vacation Beaches This annual report of water quality at U.S. beaches includes information about beach-water pollution, health risks, and state standards and closing/advisory standards. Includes detailed data for individual states and composite data and graphs. Also includes related information on topics such as 10 simple things individuals can do to help improve beach-water quality and protect their health. From the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Conflicting Attitudes Hinder Participation In Clinical Trials Women have conflicting attitudes about participating in clinical trials because of uncertainties about trusting the experimenters, fear of the trial itself and hope that the research will result in medical progress, according to a new study at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Penn Researchers Take A Big Step Forward In Making Smaller Circuits In the race to take advantage of the amazing electric properties of nanotubes, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania developed a new method to create functional nanotube circuits. The physicists overcame some of hurdles of working with nanotubes -- particularly their size -- by dipping semiconductor chips into liquid suspensions of carbon nanotubes. Their findings represent a big step toward creating things like nanoscale chemical sensors, flexible electronics and high-density microprocessors. New Technique Scans Electrical 'Brainscape' Using hairlike microelectrodes and computer analysis, neurobiologists at Duke University Medical Center have demonstrated that they can see the detailed instant-to-instant electrical "brainscape"of neural activity across a living brain. American Bankers Association: Disaster Recovery Information about banking practices in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama following Hurricane Katrina. Includes links to information about the New Orleans Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Social Security deposits, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) assistance for displaced customers, specific banks operating in the region, and related information. Nanotechnology Surges Into Health And Fitness Products More than 60 percent of the 580 products in a newly-updated inventory of nanotechnology consumer products are such 'un-geeky'items as sports equipment and clothing. And, manufacturers are overwhelmingly using silver as the nanomaterial of choice. Fat Mum Hastens Path To Childhood Obesity A fat mother hastens a child's path to obesity, finds a new study. Other factors included too much time spent in front of the TV and rapidly piling on the pounds in early childhood. Children who had acquired a high percentage body fat by the age of 3˝were significantly more likely to be obese at the age of 7 than those with low percentage body fat. Sleep Apnea And Risk For Stroke And Death An observational study of more than 1,000 patients at the Yale Center for Sleep Medicine found that obstructive sleep apnea significantly increases the risk of stroke or death from any cause, and that the risk is linked to sleep apnea severity. The researchers found the increased risk to be independent of other factors, including hypertension. Lest We Forget: Images From the Civil Rights Movement Collection of portraits by 20th century artist Robert Templeton of leaders involved in the American Civil Rights movement. Features briefly annotated images of over two dozen individuals such as Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and Whitney Moore Young, Jr. Also includes links to related sites. From the Robert Templeton Estate. 'Plastic Oil' Could Improve Fuel Economy In Cars, Chemists Say Recycled plastic bottles could one day be used to lubricate your car's engine, according to researchers at Chevron and the University of Kentucky, who in laboratory experiments converted waste plastic into lubricating oil. These polyethylene-derived oils, they say, could help improve fuel economy and reduce the frequency of oil changes. The pilot study appears in the July 20 issue of the American Chemical Society's peer-reviewed journal Energy &Fuels.
