New research published in the mathematical journal Geometry and Topology describes a useful pattern of numbers that has lain hidden for almost 100 years in one of the most notable classification schemes for twisted knots. New brain cells that develop in the olfactory system of adult mice appear to play a role in the brain different from that of older neurons. The new olfactory neurons preferentially learn to respond to new odors, and their flexibility suggests that such neurons could be induced to integrate into other regions of the brain, perhaps replacing neurons lost to injury or disease.
