Columbus, Ohio

Columbus is the capital of the state of Ohio in the United States of America.

The city is the largest in the state, with a population of 711,470 as of the 2000 census. According to recent U.S. census estimates, the metropolitan areas of Cleveland and Cincinnati are both larger than the Columbus metropolitan area, whose metropolitan area has a population of 1,500,000. Columbus is the county seat of Franklin County.

Columbus is the home of the Ohio State University, which has the distinction of being the second largest single campus in the United States (48,003 total enrollment according to the OSU Office of University Relations [1]). The state government and the university together dominate city life.

Columbus is home to many sports teams, including the Columbus Clippers minor league baseball team the Columbus Crew Major League Soccer team, and the Columbus Blue Jackets National Hockey League team.

Columbus is served by Port Columbus International Airport, Rickenbacker International Airport, Ohio State University Airport, and Bolton Field Airport.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 550.5 km² (212.6 mi²). 544.6 km² (210.3 mi²) of it is land and 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.07% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 711,470 people, 301,534 households, and 165,240 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,306.4/km² (3,383.6/mi²). There are 327,175 housing units at an average density of 600.8/km² (1,556.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 67.93% White, 24.47% African American, 0.29% Native American, 3.44% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 2.65% from two or more races. 2.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 301,534 households out of which 28.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.1% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.2% are non-families. 34.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 14.0% from 18 to 24, 35.1% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,897, and the median income for a family is $47,391. Males have a median income of $35,138 versus $28,705 for females. The per capita income for the city is $20,450. 14.8% of the population and 10.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.7% are under the age of 18 and 10.9% are 65 or older.
