Combatant

A combatant (also referred to as a "Enemy combatant") is a soldier or guerrilla member who is waging war. Under the Geneva Conventions, a person waging war must have the following four characteristics to be protected by the laws of war:

  1. In uniform; wearing distinctive clothing making them recognizable as soldiers from a distance.
  2. Openly bearing arms; carrying guns or small arms and not concealing them.
  3. Under officers; obedient to a chain of command ending in a political leader or government.
  4. Fighting according to the laws of war; not committing atrocities or crimes, not deliberately attacking civilians or engaging in terrorism.

A combatant who has surrendered becomes a prisoner of war.

A captured person not wearing a uniform who is caught carrying weapons or engaging in warlike acts (such as a spy) is not a combatant and is therefore not protected by the laws of war. Such persons should be treated according to applicable civilian laws (if any). In practice they may be tortured or executed.

By studying a little-known yeast too primitive to get diseases, Johns Hopkins researchers have uncovered a surprising link between two processes at play in heart disease and cancer in people.

NYU Psychology Researchers Show How Attention Enhances Visual Percepti
Researchers at New York University have determined the location in the brain where involuntary attention enhances visual processing. The researchers, from NYU's Department of Psychology and Center for Neural Science, found that attending to, or selectively processing information from a given location without directing our eyes to that location, enhances performance in visual tasks as well as the neural activity underlying the processing of ensuing images.

Study Shows Haploidentical Natural Killer Cells May Provide Hope For S
A University of Minnesota Cancer Center study indicates natural killer cells obtained from a family member and artificially stimulated may provide renewed hope for some patients who have advanced acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), a highly fatal cancer of the bone marrow, that has become resistant to standard treatment with chemotherapy.

Tiny Crow Camera Spies On Clever Birds
Researchers can now 'hitch a ride'with wild birds and witness their natural and undisturbed behaviour. Scientists developed miniaturised video cameras with integrated radio-tags that can be carried by wild, free-flying birds. Using this new 'video-tracking'technology, they spied on the behaviour of New Caledonian crows, a species renowned for its sophisticated use of tools, recording behaviours never seen before.

Not Just Humans Benefit From Animal Biotechnology
Laboratory animals are the source of major discoveries and breakthroughs in biology, not just in tackling disease but also unravelling fundamental molecular processes. New technology capable of analysing animal genes across the whole genome is now yielding many benefits for agriculture and human society.

Genetic Factors Partly Influence Differences In Language Development
Data from a longitudinal study involving 4 -- year old twins has shown that genetic factors appear to influence individual differences in language development among children. Additionally, it was found that environmental influences on children's language development were unique to the individual, not to the shared environment. These results are a step towards understanding the specific genes involved in language development in children.
