The Boom in Bomb Detection: Get Ready to Be Scanned, Sniffed and Zappe May 2004 article that describes technological advances in the area of bomb detection when materials are carried in cars, packages, or on a person. Methods discussed include X-rays, "the quadruple resonance technology that zaps people with low-frequency radio waves,"and "electronic sniffers."From Scientific American. Researchers First To Map Gene That Regulates Adult Stem Cell Growth A new discovery in stem cell research may mean big things for cancer patients in the future. After being the first to genetically map and identify a gene that regulates adult stem cells, the researchers investigated the gene's protein product, Latexin, which can be used to ramp up the body's stem cell count. The team's findings are being published in Nature Genetics. Ooze And The Hydrothermal Ventilation Of The Oceanic Crust Hydrothermal circulation in the oceanic basement has widespread effects on seafloor heat flow, ocean chemistry, and geologic carbon cycling. The occurrence of vigorous water exchange between the ocean and igneous crust depends on whether the high-permeability basaltic basement is hydrologically connected to the seafloor or blocked by low-permeability sediments. Unique Recordings Of Brain Cell Activity Reveal Nature Of Narcolepsy, UCLA/Veterans Affairs neuroscientists have pinpointed the electrical "signature"of the brain cells whose loss causes human narcolepsy, and made the first recordings of their activity. Made in freely moving rats in waking and across the sleep cycle, these recordings show hypocretin neurons are active during excitement generated by positive emotions and by interest in one's surroundings. New Form Of Hydride Stimulates Research On Hydrogen Storage, Hydrogen- Research on hydrogen-fueled cars may be onestep closer to application because of the discovery of a new form of hydride. The material, lithium borohydride, is a promising energy storage system: it contains 18 weight percents of hydrogen, which makes it attractive for use in hydrogen-fueled cars. Its drawback is that it only releases hydrogen at temperatures above 300C. The team has found a new form of the compound that could possibly release hydrogen in mild conditions.
