Commerce is a city located in Jackson County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,292.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census of 2000, there are 5,292 people, 2,051 households, and 1,433 families residing in the city. The population density is 246.2/km² (637.3/mi²). There are 2,273 housing units at an average density of 105.7/km² (273.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.13% White, 14.74% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,051 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% are married couples living together, 15.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% are non-families. 26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.94. In the city the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 85.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.6 males. The median income for a household in the city is $33,897, and the median income for a family is $39,615. Males have a median income of $34,185 versus $22,028 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,270. 12.7% of the population and 10.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 17.5% are under the age of 18 and 26.1% are 65 or older.
