Engineers Discover Why Toucan Beaks Are Models Of Lightweight Strength
In a paper to be published Dec. 1 in Acta Materialia, researchers report that the secret to the toucan beak's lightweight strength is an unusual bio-composite. The interior of the beak is rigid "foam"made of bony fibers and drum-like membranes sandwiched between layers of keratin, the protein that makes up fingernails, hair, and horn.

'Death Star'Black Hole Fires At Neighboring Galaxy
A jet from a black hole at the center of a galaxy strikes the edge of another galaxy. This is the first time such an interaction has been found. The jet impacts the companion galaxy at its edge and is then disrupted and deflected, much like how a stream of water from a hose will splay out after hitting a wall at an angle. Each wavelength shows a different aspect of this system, known as 3C321. The Chandra X-ray image provides evidence that each galaxy contains a rapidly growing supermassive black hole at its center.

New Strategy For AIDS Vaccination: HIV Exploits Competition Among T-ce
New HIV research shows how competition among the human immune system's T cells allows the virus to escape destruction and eventually develop into full-blown AIDS. The study, slated to appear in Physical Review Letters, employs a computer model of simultaneous virus and immune system evolution. It also suggests a new strategy for vaccinating against the virus -- a strategy that the computer simulations suggest may prevent the final onset of AIDS.
