Duke 'All-optical' Switch Could Advance Light-based Telecommunications Duke University physicists have developed a switching technique that uses a very weak beam of light to control a much stronger beam. The achievement could make optical telecommunications devices perform far more efficiently, and perhaps also aid in the development of futuristic quantum communications devices, the scientists said. Hummingbirds Lose Power At High Altitudes Hummingbirds aren't known for their power-lifting prowess. But researchers nevertheless put nearly 1,000 Peruvian hummers through lifting trials and flight tests over a two-year stretch in order to find out how their flying abilities are affected by the lower oxygen and thin air of higher elevations. In the First Person: An Index to Letters, Diaries, Oral Histories and This site "provides in-depth indexing of more than 2,500 collections of oral history in English from around the world."Covers topics such as historical events, repositories, narrator, year, and subject. Search results include bibliographic records, excerpts from materials, and links to texts. (Access to some texts requires subscriptions.) From Alexander Street Press. Antarctic Ozone Hole Shrinking Because Of Mild Weather, Not Recovery Although the ozone layer over the Antarctic this year is relatively small, this is due to mild temperatures in the region's stratosphere this winter and is not a sign of recovery, the United Nations World Meteorological Organization has said. As greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere, temperatures will fall in the stratosphere, increasing the threat of severe ozone holes in the future. Disaster in the Making Story from September 2004 on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), covering early history, changes to FEMA under George W. Bush, and concerns with FEMA after it became part of the Department of Homeland Security, such as the worry raised in a linked article that "the agency has become more focused on fighting terrorist attacks than hurricanes or floods."From the Independent Weekly (North Carolina) with contributions from papers in Jacksonville, Florida, and New Orleans. Scientists Gain New Insights Into 'Frozen' Methane Beneath Ocean Floor An international team of scientists supported by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) has completed a unique research expedition aimed at recovering samples of gas hydrate, an ice-like substance hidden beneath the seafloor off Canada's western coast. Gas hydrate, a mixture of water and mostly methane, is believed to occur under the world's oceans in great abundance, but it quickly "melts"once removed from the high pressure and cold temperatures of its natural environment, making it very challenging to recover and analyze. Treatment Extends Survival In Mouse Model Of Spinal Muscular Atrophy Drug therapy can extend survival and improve movement in a mouse model of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), new research shows. The study, carried out at the NIH's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), suggests that similar drugs might one day be useful for treating human SMA. What Comes First -- The Chicken, The Egg, Or The Bad Attitude? Researchers at the University of Alberta have discovered that chickens raised for meat can choose whether or not they'll funnel the nutrients they eat towards themselves or their eggs. Nitric Oxide Could Extend Fertility Researchers have found that an important chemical compound, nitric oxide, appears to slow or reverse the aging of eggs in mouse ovaries. The finding suggests nitric oxide could one day help women in their 30s and 40s remain fertile longer and increase their chances of having healthy babies, the scientists say.The finding, by investigators at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, was published in the Aug. 30 issue of Biochemistry, an American Chemical Society journal. Scra-Scra-Scratching Thin Air Researchers have cooked up a new tool for digital DJs: a device that converts movement into music. Clubs may soon be MC'd by DJs who produce the signature scratch sound by waving their arms in the air. By Jonny Evans.
