Researchers Develop Selective Sensors Based On Carbon Nanotubes
A team of researchers from Arizona State University and Motorola Labs has developed sensors based on carbon nanotubes, microscopically small structures that posses excellent electronic properties. In early tests, the new devices detected the presence of heavy metal ions in water down to parts per trillion levels.

Which It Is It? Resolving Ambiguous Pronouns: English Teachers Would B
"Medicines can be harmful to young children. Make sure you keep them locked in the bathroom cabinet."This humorous warning demonstrates a common grammatical error - ambiguous pronouns. Most of the time, common sense kicks in and we know we're supposed to lock medication in the bathroom cabinet and not the kids. In other instances, however, the clarification of these phrases is not always so obvious.

Marker That Identifies Energy-producing Centers In Nerve Cells Can Hel
A protein that causes coral to glow is helping researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine to light up brain cells that are critical for the proper functioning of the central nervous system. This fluorescent marker protein may shed light on brain cell defects believed to play a role in various neurological diseases.

New Undersea Images Challenge Prevailing Ideas About The Antarctic Ice
Using echo-sounding equipment to create images and maps of areas below the ocean floor, researchers have begun to unravel a new story about the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Images of areas below the Eastern Ross Sea, next to West Antarctica, provide evidence that the subcontinent was involved in the general growth of the Antarctic Ice Sheet as it formed many millions of years ago, according to scientists at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The National Science Foundation provided funding for the project.

Stem Cell Activity Deciphered In The Aging Brain
Neurobiologists have discovered why the aging brain produces progressively fewer new nerve cells in its learning and memory center. The scientists said the finding, made in rodents, refutes current ideas on how long crucial "progenitor"stem cells persist in the aging brain.

Embryonic Stem Cells Used To Grow Cartilage
Bioengineers have developed a new method for growing cartilage from human embryonic stem cells -- a technique that offers a novel approach for growing replacement cartilage for the surgical repair of the knee, jaw, hip and other joints. Results indicate the method can generate cartilage that mimics different types of cartilage in the human body.

Handling Turbulence On Titan And Earth
Ever spilled your drink on an airline due to turbulence? Researchers on both sides of the Atlantic are finding new ways to understand the phenomenon -- both on Earth and on Titan. Turbulence plays an important role in Earth?s weather system, and can be more than an inconvenience - hundreds of injuries have occurred on commercial flights due to turbulence. It is studied both in Earth's atmosphere and in that of Saturn's moon, Titan, aided by data from ESA?s Huygens probe. The study of one is helping the other.

New Heart Test To Save Time, Money And Lives
