Though Colder Than Earth, Saturn's Moon Titan Is Tropical In Nature
If space travelers ever visit Saturn's largest moon, they will find a 'tropical'world where temperatures plunge to minus 274 degrees Fahrenheit, methane rains from the sky and dunes of ice or tar cover the planet's most arid regions. These conditions reflect a cold mirror image of Earth's tropical climate, according to scientists at the University of Chicago.

New Method For Trapping Light May Improve Communications Technologies
A discovery by Princeton researchers may lead to an efficient method for controlling the transmission of light and improve new generations of communications technologies powered by light rather than electricity. The discovery could be used to develop new structures that would work in the same fashion as an elbow joint in plumbing by enabling light to make sharp turns as it travels through photonic circuits. Fiber-optic cables currently used in computers, televisions and other devices can transport light rapidly and efficiently, but cannot bend at sharp angles.

PET Shows Promise, Innovation In Detecting, Monitoring Cancers Specifi
The use of positron emission tomography (PET) with the radiotracer fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is "underutilized"in diagnosing and treating cancer of the reproductive organs -- the cervix, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva -- according to an article in the November issue of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine. Doctors are beginning to see the potential of using PET to look inside a woman's body to find gynecologic disease and its progression -- and to follow how a treatment works.

Scientists Help NASA 'Follow The Sun' -- In Stereo
The University of Minnesota-designed and built instruments aboard the twin spacecraft of NASA's STEREO mission -- currently scheduled for launch October 25 from Cape Canaveral, Florida -- will detect waves of energy and charged particles emitted by the sun via processes that may help cause coronal mass ejections, or CMEs.

Astronomers' First Direct Evidence: Young Low-mass Objects Are Twice A
Although mass is the most important property of stars, it has proved very hard to measure for the lowest mass objects in the universe. Thanks to a powerful new camera, a very rare, low-mass companion has finally been photographed.
