DNA-protein Complex Crucial To Spread Of Antibiotic Resistance Among B Researchers have solved the structure of a DNA-protein complex that is crucial in the spread of antibiotic resistance among bacteria. Knowing this structure also provides fundamental insight into how cells successfully divide into two new cells with intact DNA. Patients Swallow 'Camera-in-a-Pill' To Help Doctors Check For Diseases A new camera-in-a-pill can help doctors diagnose and evaluate diseases of the esophagus including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis and Barrett's esophagus (a pre-cancerous condition) without the use of a traditional endoscope. Gifts That Keep on Giving The kid wants an iPod, your wife wants a digital camera and you covet an obscenely large plasma TV. Forget it. Here are some Luddite gift suggestions. Commentary by Tony Long. Comprehensive Model Is First To Map Protein Folding At Atomic Level Scientists at Harvard University have developed a computer model that, for the first time, can fully map and predict how small proteins fold into three-dimensional, biologically active shapes. The work could help researchers better understand the abnormal protein aggregation underlying some devastating diseases, as well as how natural proteins evolved and how proteins recognize correct biochemical partners within living cells. New Approach For Attacking Lupus Identified Investigators have identified two new targets for drugs aimed at controlling lupus. If companies are able to develop drugs that hone in on these targets, patients may be able to control their disease with few side effects. Because abnormally high levels of interferon-alpha can lead to lupus, researchers have developed drugs that block interferon. These drugs, however, have immunosuppressive side effects that can leave patients vulnerable to various illnesses and infections, some of which can be deadly. Microarray Technology Could Help Predict Patient Response To Adjuvant Microarray technology could be used to tailor therapy according to theindividual, and prevent breast cancer patients from having to undergo painfulunsuccessful therapies. In a study published in the journal Breast CancerResearch, researchers analysed tumour tissue samples and identified a group of64 genes that can be used to predict a patient's response in the five yearsafter adjuvant therapy for breast cancer. Explosives On A Chip: Unique Structure Enables New Generation Of Milit Tiny copper structures with pores at both the nanometer and micron size scales could play a key role in the next generation of detonators used to improve the reliability, reduce the size and lower the cost of certain military munitions.
