Sharks: Missing Piece Of Fossil Puzzle Found The mode of reproduction seen in modern sharks is nearly 400 million years old. That is the conclusion based on the discovery of a so-called "clasper" in a primitive fossil fish earlier this year. Glucose 'Sensor' Plays Dual Role In Glucose Metabolism And Fat Synthes In a new study, scientists at the Scripps Research Institute have described for the first time a glucose-activated sensor that acts as a switch to decrease production of endogenous glucose in the liver, and increase conversion of glucose to fat for storage in adipose tissue. This dual action makes the sensor, Liver X Receptor, a potential target for new therapies aimed at obesity and diabetes. The research may also have implications for heart disease and stroke. Hurricane Rita: Evacuation Maps (Texas) Links to evacuation maps created by the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, the National Weather Service, and the Texas Division Of Emergency Management. Covers Brazoria, Galveston, and Harris counties; Matagorda (includes Calhoun, Jackson, Matagorda, and Victoria counties); Sabine Area (includes Chambers, Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Newton, and Orange counties); and Coastal Bend Area (includes Aransas, Kenedy,Kleberg, Nueces, Refugio, and San Patricio counties). Protein 'Key' Could Aid Search For Cancer Drugs New research at Rice University is allowing biochemists to understand a key hierarchy of protein interactions that occurs in DNA replication, showing for the first time how a key protein "trumps"its rivals and shuts down cell division while DNA repairs take place. Asthma, Allergies May Reduce Risk Of Brain Cancer Having asthma, hay fever or another allergic condition may reduce the risk of developing one fatal form of brain cancer, a new study suggests. New evidence for this relationship is found in the normal variation of two genes, the scientists say. Variations in certain genes may make a person more prone to develop asthma or allergies and those same variations may protect adults against the most common kind of brain cancer. The Enduring Meaning of Bartolomeo Vanzetti and Nicola Sacco Within th This site features articles written in the 1990s and related material about these two Italian-born American anarchists, who were executed 1927 in Massachusetts for murder and theft. Includes an essay on the historical and legal setting relating to Sacco and Vanzetti's arrest and trial. From a Sacco and Vanzetti scholar. Nanoparticle Technique Could Lead To Improved Semiconductors Devices made from plastic semiconductors, like solar cells and light-emitting diodes, could be improved based on information gained using a new nanoparticle technique. P2008: Race for the White House Coverage of the 2008 U.S. presidential elections, including candidates and their campaigns, media coverage, political parties, interest groups, and voting. Features background and analysis for the pre-campaign and pre-primary periods, primaries in specific states, conventions, debates, and other topics related to the elections. From Democracy in Action, a "nonpartisan, nonprofit effort dedicated to educating citizens about the political process and their role in making it work." New Data About The Laws Governing Embryo Development In Organisms Emer Research aimed at understanding the mechanisms underlying embryo development has taken a step forward thanks to collaborative work between biologists specialized in the study of the fruit fly and scientists specialized in the design of mathematical models that simulate the functioning of biological systems. Strange-behaving Crystals Could Have Impact On Research, Technology Aperiodic, rule-bending crystals are the focus of an article in Science. Co-authors looked at how these aperiodic crystals behave differently from "normal"periodic crystals. These differences could have implications not only for research but also for technology that relies on crystals, from computer displays to hard drives.
