Only One-third Of Women Take Vitamin To Help Prevent Serious Birth Def Only one-third of childbearing age women are taking a multivitamin containing the B vitamin folic acid daily to prevent serious birth defects of the brain and spine in their future babies, according to survey results, published in the September 30 issue of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR.). The results highlight the need to increase folic acid fortification of the grain supply, the March of Dimes says. Subtypes Of Ependymomas Arise From Rare Stem Cells In The Nervous Syst Finding suggests that new drugs to treat ependymoma and other types of solid tumors should be designed to target the specific signal pathways that cause uncontrolled replication of cancer stem cells, according to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. An Irregular Heartbeat Makes Exercise Deadly Humans lacking the protein cardiac calsequestin (CASQ2) have a normal heartbeat when not exercising, but their heartbeat becomes irregular when they exercise, putting them at risk for sudden death. A new study in mice, by researchers from Vanderbilt University, has now shed light on why the lack of CASQ2 only triggers an irregular, and potentially fatal, heartbeat during exercise. Seeing Seeing In Action: New Uses Of Imaging Techniques Broadens World Harvard Medical School researchers are seeing what seeing does to the brains of animals and making images that show for the first time single brain cells working together. The work, by Professor of Neurobiology Clay Reid and colleagues from Harvard Medical School, combines existing imaging techniques to create high-resolution movies of the working brain. Space Mission Xeus Probes Origins Of The Universe XEUS, which stands for X-ray Evolving Universe Spectroscopy, aims to study the fundamental laws of the Universe. With unprecedented sensitivity to the hot, million-degree universe, XEUS will explore key areas of contemporary astrophysics: growth of supermassive black holes, cosmic feedback and galaxy evolution, evolution of large-scale structures, extreme gravity and matter under extreme conditions, the dynamical evolution of cosmic plasmas and cosmic chemistry. Marquis de Lafayette at 250 Site from Lafayette College about the celebration of the life and legacy of the Marquis de Lafayette on the 250th anniversary of his birth (September 6, 2007). Features a video clip, links to online exhibits about this French aristocrat who participated in the American and French Revolutions (such as on Lafayette's anti-slavery stance), images of Layette material in the college collection, and details about celebration events. Dengue Fever Is A Potential Threat To US Public Health, Experts Say A disease most Americans have never heard of could soon become more prevalent if dengue, a flu-like illness that can turn deadly, continues to expand into temperate climates and increase in severity, according to a new commentary. Researchers Transform Stem Cells Found In Human Fat Into Smooth Muscle UCLA researchers have transformed adult stem cells taken from human adipose -- or fat tissue -- into smooth muscle cells, which help the normal function of a multitude of organs like the intestine, bladder and arteries. The research may help lead to use of fat stem cells for smooth muscle tissue engineering and repair. Loss Of Body Mass Linked To Development Of Alzheimer's Disease Loss of body mass over time appears to be strongly linked to older adults' risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD), and the greater the loss the greater the chance of a person developing the disease, according to a new study, which is the first to associate decline in body mass with the eventual onset of Alzheimer's. Gannet Birds Under Threat From Global Warming Researchers have warned that global warming is a major threat to the gannet, a species known for its stable populations and constant breeding success. As sea temperatures continue to rise and fish stocks diminish, gannets are being forced further afield and are away from their nests for longer periods.
