The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (Ityop'iya Federalawi Demokrasiyawi Ripeblik, Amharic: የኢትዮጵያ ፈደራላዊ ዲሞክራሲያዊ ሪፐብሊክ) is a nation of northeastern Africa. Unique among African countries, the ancient Ethiopian monarchy maintained its freedom from colonial rule, one exception being the Italian occupation of 1936-41. In 1974 a military junta, the Derg, deposed Emperor Haile Selassie (who had ruled since 1930) and established a socialist state. Torn by bloody coups, uprisings, wide-scale drought, and massive refugee problems, the regime was finally toppled by a coalition of rebel forces, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), in 1991. A constitution was adopted in 1994 and Ethiopia's first multiparty elections were held in 1995. A border war with Eritrea that erupted in May 1998 has strengthened the ruling coalition, but has hurt the nation's economy.

The capital is Addis Ababa.

Who Laid The First Egg? Scientists Closer To Linking Embryos Of Earth'
A decade ago, geobiologist Shuhai Xiao and his colleagues discovered thousands of 600-million-year-old embryo microfossils in the Doushantuo Formation, a fossil site near Weng'an, South China. In the February issue of Geology, the journal of the Geological Society of America, Xiao will report discoveries about the intermediary stage that links the embryo to the adult.

Parents Blind To Children's Risk Taking &Skilled Risk Management
Parents are often totally unaware of just how often their children take risks and just how good they are at managing that risk. Researchers found children indulge in a great deal of thoughtful and considered risk taking that is invisible to adults. On average the researchers found that while children may make misjudgments, they do not, as is sometimes assumed, 'blindly'throw themselves into risk-taking behaviors.

Brain Cells Work Differently Than Previously Thought
Scientists know that information travels between brain cells along hair-like extensions called axons. For the first time, researchers have found that axons don't just transmit information -- they can turn the signal up or down with the right stimulation. This finding may help scientists develop treatments for psychiatric disorders such as depression and schizophrenia in which it is thought that different parts of the brain do not communicate correctly with each other.

A Molecular Basis For Selective Therapeutic Intervention In Alzheimer'
The contribution of University of Aveiro researchers to the complex theme of how 'Cellular stress affects phosphorylation dependent AßPP processing' showed that, even under conditions of cellular stress, one could favour non-toxic AßPP processing by modulating intracellular protein phosphorylation systems and this, in turn, may constitute the basis for selective therapeutic intervention.

Proteins'Role In Coronary Heart Disease
Scientists provided the first large-scale identification of the proteins involved in coronary heart disease. The information will help to better understand the progression of the disease, improve diagnosis, and detect early pathological signs more efficiently. Coronary heart disease, which is characterized by abnormal thickening and narrowing of the blood vessels, is the first leading cause of death in the United States. But what happens inside the cells of these blood vessels is not completely understood.
