Preposterous Headdresses and Feathered Ladies: Hair, Wigs, Barbers, an This companion to a 2003 exhibit at the Yale University's Lewis Walpole Library features "a selection of prints [from the second half of the 18th century] focused on hair and wigs, and on the hairdressers and barbers who created and tended them."Includes images of prints such as "A Doleful Disaster, or Miss Fubby Fatarmin's Wig Caught Fire"and "A French Hair Dresser Running through the Streets to his Customers." Atrogin Breaks Down The Side Effects Of Statins Statins are a popular class of drugs used to successfully combat high cholesterol. However, the rare, but serious, and poorly understood side effect of skeletal muscle breakdown prevents more prevalent use of these drugs. New research in mice has now indicated that atrogin-1 is a critical mediator of statin-induced muscle damage and that inhibiting atrogin-1 function might protect against this unwanted side effect of statins. Voting Systems For Seniors Can Improve Voting Accuracy And Speed Researchers have identified ways to improve electronic voting accuracy among older voters while also shortening waiting time at the polls. They tested four configurations and found that the pure touchscreen format with one ballot per screen was found to produce the most accurate results, but the pure touchscreen with full ballot on a single screen showed the fastest completion times. As is often the case with human-machine interfaces, there is a trade-off between accuracy and speed. Drought As The 'New Normal' Droughts are slow, tortuous emergencies that seem to sneak up on us. It doesn't have to be that way, say a climatologist and a political scientist who point to a better way. High-resolution CT Scan Modeling For Creating Facial Implants Aids In A preliminary study suggests that high-resolution computed tomography modeling allows surgeons to custom-design acrylic implants prior to reconstructive surgery for patients with severe defects in their faces and eye cavities. Such implants appear to offer excellent aesthetic results and are well tolerated over the long term, according to a report in the November/December issue of Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. Heart Damage Can Be Reversed with Early Treatment Researchers have discovered that treating people who have early cardiovascular abnormalities, but show no symptoms of cardiovascular disease, can slow progression and even reverse damage to the heart and blood vessels. In a recent double-blind study, researchers enrolled 76 asymptomatic subjects with early markers for cardiovascular disease, based on a 10-factor scale called the Rasmussen Disease Score. During the first six months of the study, 38 subjects received a placebo, and the other 38 subjects took 160mg of Valsartan, a drug that blocks a hormone that is detrimental to the blood vessels and the heart. Ideal nanoparticle cancer therapies surf the bloodstream Researchers are studying blood using computer models that simulate how the fluid and the cells it contains move around. One new study shows how components in blood line up to prepare for healing; another demonstrates the best shape to use for man-made nanoparticles that target cancers -- a surfboard.
